Flax acreage to surge in Iowa says state experts
Iowa flax fields are set to grow markedly as extension specialists Charles Reddy and L. C. Burnett of Iowa State College project a 50 percent jump in acreage to about 188 000 this year from 92 000 last year. They cite AAA payments and the crop as a nurse plant, with favorable conditions lifting bushels per acre while corn, barley, and spring wheat show declines. Flax follows corn to resist disease and should not be planted on sand or peat. seedbeds must be firm and rolling after plowing.

Smaller pig crop may bring high hog prices
Iowa State College economists say the 1940 pig crop will be about 10 percent smaller than 1939, based on a U S Department of Agriculture spring survey. They project an 8 percent drop in spring pigs and hogs marketed from October 1940 to April 1941, with a 12 percent fall in fall farrowings leading to a 10 percent yearly reduction. Higher prices hinge on demand stability or gains from the armament program.
