Wilhelm Blumenstock son of Mr and Mrs F W Blumenstock sustained serious injuries Thursday when the telephone pole he was atop fell at Hibbing Minnesota He was removing old wire near an iron pit his safety belt saved him from being hurled his hip bone cracked and he suffered multiple cuts and bruises He is in Hibbing hospital and expected to stay ten days or longer.
Farmers face one of the worst chinch bug plagues, extending from Mills to Des Moines counties and into Missouri. Entomologist Dr. C. J. Drake warns of heavy migration into corn within two weeks, but creosote treated paper barriers offer a near-term defense. Delays at critical crossing times can cost acres, while barriers and holes sprayed with creosote aim to halt bugs during migration. By June 28 the Department of Agriculture ordered 44 cars of creosote for infested counties. five storage tanks hold large supplies for dispersal.
The Hible brothers’ circus arrives in Moravia for a two day Fourth of July stand with wild animal acts and free performances before each show. Moravia’s 81st annual celebration features four band concerts, an afternoon speech by Rev Harold Lancaster, contests at 2 30, and a final band concert at 7 80 followed by more free acts.
John O. Hawk brother of F P Hawk of Moravia died at his Davenport home Thursday morning after a month’s illness. He was 65. Funeral Saturday with burial in Davenport. Survived by wife two sons two sisters and brother F P Hawk. He lived in Davenport 28 years born near Albia Sept 30 1874 educated at Iowa State Normal Cedar Falls and Iowa State College Ames. He married Misa Alice Bixby July 5 1905. He worked with Davenport advertising firm widely traveled and for 40 years with a Davenport tailoring firm. Don Orelup, son of Dr. and Mrs. D K Orelup, fractured his left forearm Sunday when a rope swing rope broke at the Kellogg home of Dr. I L Gould. Both forearm bones broken above the wrist and set by Dr Gould, then again in Albia, before transfer to Des Moines for further care.
A violent wind and rain storm swept through Moravia Thursday night, delivering a bright lightning display and damaging nearby Centerville and Moulton more than Moravia. The storm struck around 11:30 and lasted nearly an hour, hindering Republican convention balloting in Philadelphia.
This summer brings injuries to Moravia news boys. Junior Stansberry broke his leg in a fall from a cherry tree. His Des Moines Tribune route is covered by substitute Carl Richard Hiatt. Hiatt, a carrier for Ottumwa Courier, was severely injured Saturday night in a south town automobile crash. Don Orelup could not complete Centerville Towegian rounds after breaking his left arm when a rope supporting him while swinging broke.
Moravia's Red Cross war relief fund receipts grew by 3 dollars in the past week as funds are forwarded quickly to aid Europeans displaced by the war. The report lists contributions from A Friend, C A Turner, Mrs C A Turner, with a total of under seven dollars, and appeals for donations at Mrs T J Zike or the Union office.
Seven local residents were badly hurt when two cars collided near the Ernie Tucker farm four miles south of Moravia on highway 60. Victims include Clyde McDonald and Carl Richard Hiatt with critical injuries. Josephine McDonald and Elaine McDonald among others sustained head wounds and fractures. All injured are said to be out of danger now, with R B Wilson and John Young aiding the rescue and transport to St Joseph’s hospital in Centerville. The incident occurred about 2:30 Saturday evening as Hiatt attempted to pass a truck. Josephine McDonald, valedictorian of Moravia High, was among the first to see danger. One uninjured member remained in each family.

Mrs. Wilbert Hiatt hosted a Thursday evening party for Deloris Hiatt to mark her 12th birthday. The event featured games and dainty refreshments including a specially decorated birthday cake.
