Tom Drake a longtime resident east of Moravia died at his home about 8:00 am Wednesday after a long illness. He was a well known citizen and is survived by his wife three children Marshall Drake Bert Drake and Ethel Herteen of the Unionville route five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
Postmaster J. D. Minnes notes auto stamp sales accelerated over the past few days with Monday and Tuesday seeing the strongest demand and some further inflow on Wednesday morning. New stamps are required for all automobiles starting July 2.
L A Roland local D X service Manager announces a Globe hoist installation replacing the pit at the northeast corner of the square. He says the hoist will be more serviceable for car servicing at the D X station.
Cadet Eugene Wilcox of the class 42-H graduated from Gardner Field California after enrollment as an Aviation Cadet in the Air Gorge Basic Flying School. He finishes June 23 and moves to Luke Field Phoenix for a ten week advanced course with a future commission as second lieutenant in the Air Corps Reserve. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Ralph McDonough of Moravia.
Church announcements list services and activities with times and leaders. Nightly programs include worship at 10 p m and 7 p m youth fellowship, midweek choir practice, and a summer institute invitation for young folks to assist attendance.
United Brethren Talbott pastor guides a Sunday schedule with Church School at 10:00 a m led by Carl IVandante, morning service at 10:59 a m, Christian Endeavor at 7:00 p m, evening service at 8:00 p m, and a Thursday prayer meeting at 8 o'clock.
Morning Bible School led by Mrs H N Utterback at 10:00. Communion at 10:45. Sermon by Rev Monroe Jarvis of Des Moines at 11:00. Evening service at 8:00 with another sermon by Rev Jarvis.
The ladies of the Methodist church will serve a supper on July 4th from 6 to 8 pm featuring roast beef dressing browned potatoes green beans beets cabbage potato salad deviled eggs bread butter cake coffee and fruit salad.
The July Fourth Band Program led by director G G Peterson rehearsed two weeks for a concert dominated by patriotic numbers including Over There Light Cavalry and Americade Overture. Notable performances include Mrs Day and Duane Veach solos, with Maxine Smith, Jack Broshar, and Carol Jarly earning four-year study recognitions.
Fragmentary entries recall Mrs Elmer Shake of Altin and Elvin Stocker east of town Monday evening. Others list Mrs Charles Hiatt and Mrs Pearerg of Ottumwa, Donald I Bivens, Dal Canter and a funeral at Frida noon. Mr and Mrs John Bickford are mentioned in the evening context.
Elmer Vante of Detroit among 100 graduates receiving metallurgical certificates on June 25 1942 at the Horace H Rackham Education Memorial Building Detroit. Brig Gen Stephen G Henry gave the commencement address. Chrysler Corporation officials and institute leaders attended. Vante is a Chrysler employee and son in law of Moravia residents.
NellIe Jones Hiatt born May 21 1884 on a Moravia farm died June 23 1942 in Mercy Hospital Oskaloosa Iowa at 58. She married Wess Hiatt October 21 1908 and had two children Devigt Hiatt and Wilda Argo. Funeral at Moravia United Brethren church June 25 with interment Hillcrest cemetery.

Mrs Martha Phillips 91 died Sunday at her daughter Mrs Steven Brown home in Moravia after months of illness. She had lived there 14 years. Survived by three sons and three daughters. Funeral services from Princeton Missouri Methodist church at 2 00 p m Tuesday.

Harris reports new address 814 E 88rd Street Minneapolis and plans to start work July 6 at Twin Cities Ordnance Plant as an adjuster. He also pursues music studies toward an MA. Mr and Mrs Willard Coffin announce the birth of son Mark Edwin June 21, with Coffin lineage tracing to Lincoln Nebraska and former Hiattevile residents.
Dallas Faber sustained a severe head wound at his farm last Friday while reactivating a cultivator from a tractor. A spring release struck his head, rendering him unconscious briefly. clamps were needed to close the scalp wound. He is recovering satisfactorily.
John W. Kenton and daughters Ruth and Dortha hosted neighbors to honor Roy M. Kenton, a Lexington veteran on furlough from the Pacific war. The gathering included visits and Roy recounting wartime experiences, followed by ice cream and cookies, with several local families in attendance. He left Albia early Wednesday to rejoin his unit on the West Coast.
Howard Smith editor of the Moravia Union will take over Moravia rural route number one on Monday July 6. He replaces D E Bishop who retired September 1 last year after nearly 30 years as carrier. Substitute Lee Hiatt will continue as carrier on route one. No announcement on Union management yet.
The Brompton school reunion will be held at the Brompton schoolhouse on Sunday July 12 with a basket dinner at noon. Former pupils teachers and friends are cordially invited. Other items note Earl Cameron left for South Bend Wash after visiting his parents and various local family updates follow about residents visiting and employment changes.
Carl William Foster 24 died after a hay wagon accident four miles southwest of Moravian on Wednesday evening. He was mounting a hay rack when the wagon upset as horses bolted. he died at St Joseph hospital Centerville about 10 30 p m. Foster, husband of Maxine and father of two boys, was a son of Earl and Wilma Foster and leaves parents, a brother Ernest, grandparents Will Kelly Ottumwa and many relatives. Funeral at Moravia United Era church Friday June 26 with burial Hillcrest cemetery. pallbearers named and singing by Mrs Coffin and Mrs Townsend.
Twenty eight youths aged 18 to 20 registered here on Wednesday in the fifth registration for the selective service. Four came from Monroe county and one registrant hailed from Missouri. Registrar C. C. Coulson, with assistants Margaret Ward and Dorothy Lee Rain, led the effort at the Community Building.
Mrs W B Hayes of Centerville district president of the Women s Society of Christian Service reports on the national assembly held in Columbus Ohio at the Methodist church meeting last Wednesday. Mrs C M McFatridge led the business session while Mrs Fred Blumenstock presided. After flags saluted the audience sang America with Bernadine Bishop at the piano. A one o'clock luncheon preceded the service with Wesley Chapel and Hilton churches joining. A large group attended and Mrs Norman Firkins of Vallejo Calif visited relatives. Harold Burton of Knoxville spent the weekend with Tom Cameron and Curtis Burton families.
