Snow and freezing conditions halted travel as an Arctic wind struck Thursday. By Friday morning roads were opened by heavy machinery and temperatures stayed below freezing. Local Moravians chase a crossword prize. puzzlers race for perfect answers while contest odds amuse Sunday readers.
At the last moment a few items passed through the local post office. The piece hints that postal staff may soon find life insurance difficult to obtain if they are not involved in similar activity. Circumstantial evidence could reduce their life to worth about four wooden nickels.
Mr and Mrs Clayton Sheldon visited Bert Sheldon Tuesday at the Ottumwa hospital where he is recovering after surgery. Mrs Roscoe Argo visited Saturday evening with Mrs Jess Lackender. David Callen visited Thursday afternoon with his grandparents Mr and Mrs J N Callen. Mr and Mrs Wayne Thompson and Marcia were in Centerville last week. Emmett Derby called at Russell Brown's one evening last week. Mr and Mrs Earl Swift called on Mr and Mrs Jess Lackender Sunday evening. Roseann Calhoun is ill with a heavy cold and asthma and they took her to the doctor Monday morning.
The Board of Supervisors of Appanoose County met in regular session with Earl Extine Walter Harper and Glen Johnson present. They approved various payments including Acres Blackmar Company 188.89 Appanoose County Extension Service 500.00 Centerville Municipal Water Works 27.50 Centerville National Bank 566.65 and numerous clerks and trustees fees totaling multiple small disbursements.
A long ledger-like list records various payments and salaries from multiple townships and agencies. Names include Fenton, Hargis, Laurson, and Laurson Eta Jean among trustees and clerks. Utilities from Iowa Southern and Hy Vee Stores appear with numerous small line items for supplies, postage, and services.
