Tests Show High Seed Scab on Wheat and Barley at College

Seed laboratory tests at Town State College directed by Dr. R. H. Porter reveal extensive scab infection in barley and wheat, with some barley samples at 100 percent and wheat at 100 percent in spots. Scabby grain is light, has low germination, and causes issues in hog feed. barley seed is often discarded for feed. Fanning can remove light-weight kernels, and subsequent Ceresan treatment at 44 ounce per bushel can yield robust plants and control related diseases. Seed treatment won’t prevent scab on heads during growth due to carryover on cornstalks. Farmers should seed heavier to compensate for poorer barley seed, Porter notes.
