Residents woke to find three to four inches of snow thinning rapidly after a teen age blizzard, with forecasts hinting at more unsettled weather as the Union week approaches. The note also recalls a humorous scene at a drugstore and a brisk storefront encounter near the Lester Smith residence.

John K. Valentine of Centerville was chosen by Sen Clyde L. Herring to become the U S attorney for the southern district of Iowa. He would replace the late Edwin G Moon of Ottumwa in a $6000 a year post for a four year term once confirmed by the president and Senate. Valentine has held multiple offices including state senator, board of assessment and review member and chairman, and lieutenant governor in 1937 and 1938.
One hundred thirty seven fathers and sons attended the Father and Son banquet hosted by Class No. 8 of the Methodist Sunday School. A total of 148 reservations were made, with some ticket holders unable to attend. The event featured a black red and white themed dining room with dog themed centerpieces and favors. The menu included Boneless Meat Dog Mush and Terrier Demi-Tasse coffee. The program listed invocation by Rev. T J Zike group singing toastmaster Dr D K Orelup and a sequence of speakers and performances by local youth.
The Band Auxiliary will meet in the music room at the school building at 8 o'clock Friday afternoon.

Moravia announces added attraction on the basketball docket with Hiteman teams hosting on Thursday. Boys first and girls second meet local top squads as girls second team also competes. Hiteman boys are a strong sectional contender after a close win over Melrose, with past three games decided by one point.
A Moravia Rebekah Lodge event featured Marine Rebekah Lodge No. 271 presenting the Traveling Gavel to Sister Glad sie Pennington, Noble Grand of Moravia Rebekah No. 404. The gavel, in a silver moon with pink and green ribbons, traveled next to Troy or Keosauqua, then across Appanoose, Davis, and Van Buren counties.
John L. Chambers of Centerville son of Mr and Mrs J F Chambers near Hiattadille has been promoted to district manager by Buick. He will take up new duties January 5 with potential Denver or Portland territory. Chambers has worked three years with Centerville Motors Inc Buick Pontiac dealer and previously ran shoe stores in Centerville AlWla and Creston. He will visit Chicago and Kansas City before reporting to his new assignment. He has past service with Moravia American Legion Post and was a former commander.
A reader writes of mild winter in Moravia, plans for more local news, and a trip to California by Naples neighbors. The letter mentions relatives in Stillwater Oklahoma City and Upland California, a thirtieth wedding anniversary, a daughter Allegra in Watertown South Dakota, Vera nearby, and a newborn grandson to Mrs C E Winslet. It also notes the death of Will Thomas in Los Angeles and Parson Moravia’s former furniture business background.
Little Wilma Carol Robb daughter of Mr and Mrs V B Robb of northwest of Moravia had a narrow escape from severe burns last Thursday. While her father burned brush near a fence she darted between the flames and the fence and back again singeing her eyebrows and hair. The incident ended with only minor injuries.
Mr and Mrs Earl Brain traveled from Hedrick to join Mr and Mrs H B Watts at a Methodist church dinner honoring their 42nd wedding anniversary. Mr and Mrs Lestey Brain attended the celebration.
Legion Auxiliary will meet with Mrs Grace Veagh next Tuesday evening. All members urged to attend.

Horstman service station on highway No 60 reports cash missing estimated at five dollars since last Saturday night. Mrs Horstman stepped outside to call Mr Horstman at a nearby cafe, and the theft occurred. the swift, undetected act remains a mystery to investigators.
Moravia High School will stage Chintz Cottage the Junior Class Play in the gym at 7:80 p.m. on Tuesday February 7 with Minty and Peter Kent among the leads and a cast including Aunt Aggie and Mrs Dean. Crew heads include Hiner Lemaster Cloyed Caster Hiatt Whistler.
A correction clarifies that Ivan Boyer is a bull station agent for the Mid-Contin ent company at Pella Iowa not in Monroe. The Union had claimed he was in the oil business at Monroe Iowa last week.
Mrs Mary Hoskinson entertained a group of ladies at a quilting party Tuesday. The gathering worked on a quilt for Mia. Attendees for dinner included Mesdames Vane Jones Allie Weston Ann Coulson Ethel Houser Birdie Main Hazel Boyer Opal Harris Stella Carter Miss Mary Francis Broshar L W Main Harold Boyer Eugene Dwight and Herbert Main.

Mrs. R. L. Tarr is recovering after the car she and Mr. Tarr were riding in ran off the road on Iconium road near Guy McKern Place. The vehicle fell 3 feet after striking a bridge on a slippery road. Mrs. Tarr suffered cuts on the face and injuries to the back and shoulders. Mr. Tarr had only slight injuries.
Moravia girls beat Mystic likely by a close margin while the Moravia boys drop a one point contest. Stocker Hiner Morris led the Moravia girls with 26 points as the season ends for the senior guard. Mystic’s Williamson shifted to guard to slow the Moravia forwards and Starcevich led Mystic with five field goals and four free throws. Woodward scored early for Moravia in the boys game as Tangy’s guests pulled ahead by halftime and held on for the win. McDonough missed the game due to illness.
Berry F Halden son of Mrs J W Halden Moravia and a former Moravian Tuesday was elected secretary of the Iowa executive council announced by Governor Wilson after a council meeting Halden formerly editor of the Chariton Herald Patriot was the Republican candidate for the short term in the United States senate against Senator Guy M Gillette in 1996 He will succeed Ross Ewing Democrat who has been secretary since Clyde L Herring became governor in 1938 Salary of the council secretary is 3600 a year.
Mr and Mrs M H Johnson and their sons Donald and Charles were injured in a Hilton Sunday auto crash while returning from Fairfield. A Brizendine car pulled onto the highway from the crossroad forcing a rear collision. Mrs Johnson and Charles were most hurt but not critically.
Frank Miller, local undertaker, sustained burns to his face head and neck when a stoker at the Centerville funeral home malfunctioned and a sheet of flame erupted. An explosion likely triggered by accumulated gas caused the episode as Miller investigated the machine. He is recovering satisfactorily. Also, the Centerville Legion Post announced a farewell event this Wednesday for John J Chambers and Wm Gower who are leaving the post.
