In Albia the city council has authorized a measure as heavy snows strain farm households with beans and corn still unharvested and feed supplies dwindling, prompting locals to joke about dreaming of a white Christmas and June in January.
The report blends rumors about riot gear purchases and TV writers seeking authentic props with a note on Christmas origins. A separate police investigation follows the discovery of a dead man under a department store counter in New York, likely caused by Christmas crowds. Moravia Union ad promotes a weekly gift subscription.
Union Chapel holds its Christsides program at 7 15 Friday December 22. Everyone bring cookies and cups. Visits include Mr and Mrs Roy Fisher with R A Faber and Regena Sinclair and girls at Wartell Proctors. C Y F met to decorate the Christmas tree and plan the program. Several attended the Moravia Christmas program and many local families visited Proctor homes and with Stockers family Sunday afternoon.
Mrs Minnie Moffatt visited Centerville guests including Mrs Martha Hedgecock and Mrs Emma Ray. Eleanor Price of Des Moines and Mary Lee Hinegardner stayed with Rev B D Hinegardner’s family. Linda Moore hosted at Firestone. Community clubs meet December 12 with Mrs LeRoy Spurgeon. Local moves include Weilbrenners to E A Caylery home in Udell from Mark Iowa, Proffitts moving to Udell Blumer property. Snow storm of season, cold temperatures expected.
Ricky Bentzinger led the gfdde school operetta with Joanne Hawk as pianist. Other participants included Lynette Moffitt Colleen Hawk Norma Lee Faber Mike Bommer and Jeffrey Strong. Many local families attended and hosted visiting relatives during a week of social events plus a minus 28 morning noted.
The Gay church 4 H club and the girls hosted a Christmas supper then held a meeting with the pledge to the flag. Ten members answered roll call, and the minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. A basketball game with the Franklin Farmers is set for December 29 at the old gym, then the group adjourned after the pledge to the 4 H ag. Reported by Larry Woodward on December 18.
The regular Busy Maidens 4-H club gathering occurred on Monday December 4 with members present for activities and reporting.
The home gathering opened with the pledge led by president Linda Johnson. Roll call featured responses from Martha Rouse, Jean Turner, Linda Davis, Sharon Gay, Linda Johnson, Lois Ann Callen, Maxine Johnson, Marsha Stewart, Sheral Brown, Jane Estluck, Dixie Davis, Lou Ellen Rawley, and Barbara McGinnis. Rawley spoke on personal coloring while Davis demonstrated color and texture matching. The meeting adjourned after pledging to the 4-H flag and five guests attended.
The Clover Leaf club held its annual Christmas gathering on Wednesday December 13 at Ernestine Argo’s home. A large crowd attended with members, children, and husbands amid a modern tree and wrapped gifts for secret pals. Grace Utterback of Huntsville Arkansas attended as Lois Starr’s grandmother.
One event featured gift exchanges for a birthday, wedding anniversary, and Christmas for the drawn members. Two guess-whats were won by Helen McAninch and Mabel Moore. Homemade candy plates circulated as a bountiful holiday dinner preceded. The menu included Christmas salads, corkiss desserts, roast capes with noodles. Two January meetings are planned on Jan 10 at Mrs Mansel Tarbell home and Jan 24 with Janice Moore.
