Lee Hiatt, Moravia’s mayor-elect, obtains one of the county’s first auto license numbers in a pre-dawn trip to the county seat at about 3:00 am. He stood in line behind Gunner Olson of Centerville, a longtime early bird who typically secures number one. County Treasurer Buster Hargis notes Olson held the top spot.
At Center ville courthouse on the last day of November a crowd formed for auto license numbers. Clerks opened about 8 30 a m and sales began with no reserved numbers this year. A long line persisted through the day with 276 licenses sold the first day. Eugene Albright was third in line Aubrey Walter fourth and Richard Tracy fifth.
Thursday night December 21 features a Christmas program at Wesley Chapel church inviting all. Alan Dooley and the Daniels siblings attended the Douglas Doughboys 4 H meeting at Centerville Agricultural building with Mrs Virgil Dooley accompanying them.
Mrs Kenneth Daniels and Mrs Virgil Dooley hosted a Christmas dinner at the Keith Phillips Home. The Douglas Duzt held its next meeting on December 21 at Mrs Daniels home. Various residents visited, hosted, and attended gatherings at the homes of Meadows Bogart Hiatt Van Zante and others through the week.
Local social notes list visits and gatherings across families in the Shanghai area. Residents including the Overturfs, Rineharts, Christys, Wakefields, Hammo nds, and Lains hosted and attended events from Tuesday through Sunday, with church and club activities noted.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Burton visited Sunday afternoon at Fred Christys. Mr and Mrs Bert Rinehart called on Frank Rinehart in Albia Saturday. Mr and Mrs Bob Sdleszinski spent Saturday evening at Glen Overturns. They were Monday dinner guests at Gerald Rineharts. Debbie Scieszinski spent from Wednesday till Saturday evening with Verna Wakefield and family.
Weekend visitors included Opal Hart and the Hart family from Mountain Grove Missouri and LaVern Horn and daughters from Swan Iowa. Dale Cox Bry an and Ramona Cox of Des Moines joined the Bill Downing and Harold Fenton households for dinner. Burdett Cox called at several homes and helped with chicken dressing. Dale Cox Dennis Kelly and Jack Hoffman worked sawing wood as news of Mr. Johns ill but improving was shared.
Franklin and Mrs Larl Swift join Mr and Mrs Al Derby and kin for a busy week visiting at Lloyd Ammons and Calhoun homes. Neighbors attend Sunday school party and Christ mas dinner at Iconium Methodist church, with multiple family gatherings noted through Tuesday to Sunday and stays at Larry Derbys and Gary Perrys.
At the Carl Calieen home on Friday Mr and Mrs Richard Fastlick Ti Gon spent Sunday visiting Sam Easticks and others, reflecting a casual weekend gathering of neighbors.
The Shanghai club met at Doris N. Christy's home on December 6 for a cooperative dinner. Members and visitors listed attended, with mending as the day's work. Amy Hiner received a birthday gift, a card honored Allie Taylor, next meeting December 20 will include officer elections and secret pal drawings, and the group held an annual Christmas party at the schoolhouse with popcorn and candy.
A festive gathering featured secret pals revealed during gift exchanges and grab bags for men and children. Attendees enjoyed a merry time with everyone joining in the celebration.
