Local discussion centers on the fate of the Monroe county hospital with critics arguing politics has framed its setup. A new advisory board is studying operating methods from Albia area hospitals as the county shifts toward a nonpolitical board that serves residents. The Smith hospital may yield to the county facility once fully functional.
The Moravia Union prints a reader’s message from J. F. and Lorena Albert after a hospital discharge. They announce J. F.’s 32 year government retirement on December 1, share plans to travel to Florida and Iowa, and include an enclosed poem titled Yuletide Greetings to our friends signed by the Alberts. Lorena notes Dan Pence is back in town with a realty firm and may move his family here after Christmas.

Grace Methodist Church invites all to a Christmas cantata drama The Day Star Arises written by Norma J Surden with music by Ellen Lorenzen presented by the M Y F and choir on Wednesday December 22 at 7 30 p m The Sunday School Christmas program will be given and the day features a canceled M Y F meeting due to the program.
The Shanghai club met on December 8 with Doris Christy to sew carpet rags. Anna Landgrebe won the guess what. Willing Workers club members and families held a cooperative potluck at Jess Lackender’s home on Tuesday December 7 to celebrate her birthday. Ten Scouts received advancements during a bridge ceremony aboard the simulated deck of the New ton Sea Scout ship Banshee. The event marked a notable progression within the County Boy Scout District.
Franklin farmers and Happy Helpers 4-H clubs held a Christmas party and cooperative supper at Salem church on Monday night December 13, 1954. The event featured gifts from Santa, a short business meeting led by Rosalie Sweeden, roll call showcasing carol favorites, minutes and treasurer reports, a gifts-for-leaders vote, a pledge to the flag, and a program with demonstrations, speeches, songs, and a skit. Jerry Brown was honored for service and spoke about the National 4-H Congress in Chicago. Numerous families attended, listing many members and guests.
Hilton Hustlers held their regular 4 H meeting and annual Christmas potluck supper in the Hilton church basement on December 13. Gift exchange and a project planning roll call were followed by calendar sales. Poems were given by Paul Turner and Mark Van Zante, with community singing led by Jerry Main. A farewell party was held Monday night December 13 at the California schoolhouse for the Clark McKern family recently moved to Centerville. Fifty-one friends attended. The hosts were Mrs. Lester Cochran and teacher Mrs. Lula R. Tillmont. The couple received a chenille bed spread, while Marsha and Sharon were gifted costume jewelry by the school. A cooperative luncheon followed.
Taylor Township Farm Bureau met Monday night at Newpost schoolhouse. A cooperative supper was enjoyed. After the business meeting a gift exchange and visiting concluded the evening. Mr and Mrs Kenneth O Connor led the entertainment and supper with the Vernon Thorsons and Martha Coulson assisting.
Mr and Mrs Carl VanZante and Mr and Mrs Harry Woodward co host a rock party Friday at the VanZante home for Sew and So club members and families. Prizes went to Mrs Frank Wilson and Ralph Shelquist. Refreshments were served. Santa arrived at 10 53.
Appanoose county farmers face Jan 31 1955 deadline for price support loans on new small grains flax seed and soybeans and May 31 1955 for 1954 corn loans. Loans require quality tests storage either on farm or in warehouse and 1954 corn acreage allotment compliance. 1954 loan rates: oats 74c, wheat 2.32, soybeans 2.21, corn 1.60.
The Junior Missionary group met Wednesday afternoon with Terry Tuttle. The India study continued and Christmas carols were sung.
A social hour followed a meeting with 17 members and leaders Mrs Richard Tubaugh and Mrs Bert Turner present. Each member brought a gift for community Christmas baskets. Judy Smith hosted the Intermediate missionary group with six girls sharing about Dr Frank L Bach mission work in the Philippines. Mrs James Fisk read from Chand of India. Mrs Grenfell told Luke's Christmas Story and the group sang carols. Refreshments and a gift exchange concluded the afternoon.
