Seed shortages plague Iowa farmers amid seed crop drought
Extension service reports farmers have no seed oats from their own bins and face scarce grasses and small seeded legumes. Tobin Hughes notes the federal government bought seed oats and redirected it elsewhere, offering little relief. Growers must source seed within the state, with timothy at record highs and alfalfa, Sudan grass fetching doubled or triple prices. Substitutions like red top are advised where feasible.
