Janice Gideon was ill last week with colds and croup. Mrs. Merle Walter and Mary Jo Faber had severe colds but are improving. Helping Hand club met with Mr. and Mrs. J. T. VanDorin last Thursday. Men finished husking the corn and cut a low cust tree above the house noted as a landmark, deemed a menace to use and property.
The note list records many local visits and dinners across Moravia including exchanges with the Edd Robinsons Mia Homer King, Wilson Leonards, and relatives at various homes. Couples named include Mr and Mrs Darrell Smith of Des Moines and Mr and Mrs Newton Long with Jean, Elbert Perry and others at the Guy McKern, Ralph Turner, and Dell Hellyer households. Additional stops covered Centerville and Knoxville areas with several families and relatives shown visiting or hosting.
A diary style reminiscence covers scalding 76 or 80 pounds of navy beans, messy kitchen scenes, and the unseen labor behind wartime supply. The writer contrasts domestic chores with national sacrifice, notes a long day of washing pans, and reflects on workers unseen by others. Ottumwa shoppers scattered through the weekend with mention of Mrs Made Befiasa Hosta and Mrs Ray Tomlin. Billie Lockman spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Elmer Lockman. Bonita Rumley spent Monday night with Dorothy Jean Lockman. Mr and Mrs Junior Burdock of Ottumwa stayed Saturday night and Sunday at the Raymond Lockman home. My and Mrs Elbert Lockman also noted.
