Rain or Rain Now Says Edgecombe on Fall Garden Planting
Rain or no rain plant the fall garden now says Edgcomb extension horticulturist at Iowa State College. Second plantings of turnips beets carrots string beans celery cabbage and chard should be planted immediately so they will be in the ground ready to grow as soon as rain comes. Seeds for the late garden should be sown on a firm seedbed and planted deeper than in spring. Ground should be rolled after seeding and left alone until rain sprouts the seed. Professor Edgecomb does not advise watering to sprout the seed. Later in August winter radishes and winter onions are best grown before the small multiplier onion sets. Is your subscription due?
