Rites Planned for Cephus Tucker in Moravia Area

Cephus Tucker 67 of Bismarck North Dakota died Wednesday evening at his brother in law Guy Day’s home in Ottumwa after a long illness following an operation in Rochester Minnesota. He was a former bank cashier and farmer, son of Allison and Tarza Tucker, survived by his wife Bertha a son Robert of Denver and a sister Mrs Tom Long of Centerville. Funeral services were held Saturday at Grace Methodist Church with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery under Turner funeral home directions. Rev Everett Major of Willard Street Methodist Church in Ottumwa officiated.

Moravia All Stars Edge Melrose In Tight Victory

The Moravia All Stars defeated Melrose 8 to 7 on the local field Tuesday night in a close game. Moravia led briefly in the later innings after a tied duel, with McDanel pitching and Gladfelder catching for Moravia while McGrath pitched for Melrose with Hannam catching. The Stars invited teams with open dates to contact manager Maurice Walter to schedule future games.

Unionville Road Rebuilding Starts by Milton Firm

The J and K Construction of Milton has begun rebuilding Unionville Road from Moravia end toward Miller church. The new company, with young equipment and veteran operators, uses three diesel Caterpillar units, three large dirt movers, two large dozers, a sheep foot tamper puller, and a grader. Work will proceed as weather permits with the county board aiming to gravel before winter.

Ice cream truck overturns near town

A Borden ice cream truck driven by Les Whitson of Albia flipped onto its side in a corn field east of Leo VanDorin’s after braking for a corner. The driver escaped serious injury and assisted by Harold Hawk, with large containers removed by another Borden truck returning to Ottumwa.

Moravia Garden Club Holds July Meeting

The Moravia Garden Club met last Wednesday at Mrs. Frank Rogers home for the July meeting. Hostesses were Mrs. Lester Sawyer and Mrs. Riley Callen. The program featured Mrs. W. V. Murdy on midsummer garden problems and care, and Mrs. Fred Tilmont on its ponpy time. Mrs. Warren Duyvall gave Peepe suggestions. The president, Mrs. Ben Williams, formed committees for the flower show. The next meeting is August 23 at Mr. Fred Tilimont’s home.

Monroe County Picnic and Sports Festival Planned

The Monroe county rural young peoples members and the Boys 4-H officers plan the county farmer's picnic and sports festival for Saturday at Albla city park. Events begin at 9:30 AM with a safe driving contest and a softball tournament. Doris DeGeus, county women's chairman, aims to provide ample iced tea and a picnic dinner.

Aaron Campbell Honored on 78th Birthday

Moravia School Board Hears Budget and Resigns

The Moravia School board met Tuesday to hear the budget. They accepted the resignation of Martin Van Dyne of Numa, who taught science and served as high school principal. The board discussed housing eight buses, noting depreciation and winter start issues, and considered building a bus garage and workshop near the schoolhouse.

Community Family of Mikels Near Moravia Highlighted

The Mikels, a farm family long settled four miles south and one mile west of Moravia, are active in diversified farming with Angus cattle and Poland China hogs on a 452 acre spread. Gerald and Curtis help manage operations while the children pursue 4-H and FFA activities. The family, married since May 9, 1928, enjoys farm life and recently acquired a new Mercury auto.

Funeral for Rev Walter Lagle Held After Auto Crash

Rev Walter Lagle, pastor of the Church of Christ, died in a Thursday night auto crash near Prairie City when his car hit a chuckhole and railing on a gravel road. His wife was critically injured with little hope for recovery. Survivors include two daughters Nadine Newlin and Bonita Pence, and two sons Forrest and Veril, plus several grandchildren.
