A Moravia column celebrates returning youngsters and praises local support for the annual Fall Festival. It urges everyone to be boosters, accept responsibility, and cooperate across community groups, churches, schools, and clubs while noting differing views on show plans.
Vess McIntire aged 88 died at his daughter Mrs Rusha Hite home north of Oskaloosa Tuesday afternoon around four after long illness and bedrest since June 23. He once preached as a minister in various locales. Survived by two sons C W McIntire Moravia and Roy McIntire California, a daughter Rusha Hite Oskaloosa, seven grandchildren, and many relatives. Funeral plans pending with interment at Little Mound cemetery east of New Sharon.
A July 28 gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur VanDorin in Moravia honored Chas VanDorin on his birthday. About fifty-one guests brought baskets, a daughter baked a cake for the host, and attendees shared social time late into the evening.
Moravia swept Udell 23 to 4 at the school ground hall park. Locals pounded the ball and showed a reversal from prior losses. Late season practice issues and upcoming Friday game set the stage for renewed fan expectations.

Priaulx Howell wedding unites Dana Priaulx daughter of Mr and Mrs J N Priaulx Knoxville Iowa with Cecil D Howell son of Mr and Mrs George Howell Moravia at 9 p m in Unionville Missouri Christian church parsonage. Rev George Swan Jr officiated. Bride wore powder blue lace dress with white accessories. The couple will reside in Albia where Howell works as a bookkeeper at Brooke Motor Company.
Mr and Mrs Wm Gardner and Clarence Dowd returned Saturday from Excelsior Springs Missouri where they had been patients at the Balsanatorium for three weeks. The three received treatments and Mr and Mrs Gardner underwent minor operations with satisfactory recoveries.
Moravia Union reports G B Johnson, president, stresses a strong homecoming for the 1939 Moravian Fall Festival and Farmers Institute on Sept 14 15 16. Former residents urged to return or send letters with current addresses. Demonstrations promise superior local agriculture and horticulture displays.

Lovilia Press announces Jack Allred will join The Daily Jowan at the University of Iowa as manager. Lovilia publisher Lovilia Press-Gayle Bennett reports Allred departs for Iowa City after four years with Lovilia Press and nine years with the Gaddis family.
The concert program lists pieces such as Moonlight on the Nile and Field of Honor with soloists Duane Veach Roberta Main and others. The Nationalargerseee News notes bands are back after a break and plan trips before the state fair. Corn fried chicken and gravy mashed potatoes green beans sliced tomatoes cold slaw peaches and cake ice tea coffee. T. H. Johnson of Des Moines spent part of last week here with his daughter, Mrs. John Nowels.
The Peace Reunion at Main Grove on Sunday August 6 features games prizes and a program. The 42nd Boyer Reunion meets at the F A Boyer grove on Tuesday August 22. The Wilson Reunion gathers at the Eph Wilson home northeast of Moravia on Sunday August 13. All relatives invited. Mrs Clarence Dowd, Sec.
A remodeling program is underway at the Oehler Bros Oil station on highway 60 in Moravia. Work focuses on interior changes including removed partitions, relocation of walls, and new process cailing and sidewall board. Oehlers will announce a major update upon completion.
Children and grandchildren hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Roland marked George Irelan's birthday with a Sunday family dinner. Attendees included Clara Irelan, Delmar Bradshaw, John Martaching of Ottumwa, Beverly Pettit, and numerous Irelan and Stocker relatives.
The Moravia Public Schools publish a larger 1939 40 handbook detailing the extensive educational program. Union printing completed the book for distribution to patrons with descriptions of departments and a recap of the prior year, plus photographs of the Farm Shop building the band and music groups. Superintendent Young compiled the material.
Cavacu es W. F. T. Evans leads Bible School at 10 a.m. Divine Communion at 10 50 a.m. Sermon at 8 p.m. by Rev Hunt pastor of Iconium church.
The United Brethren church, led by Pastor T. J. Zike, lists Sunday services at 11 a.m. with Sunday School at 10 a.m. and evening worship at 8 p.m. An all day aid event is planned for Wednesday August 9 with a noon dinner.
Iconium Circuit announces a Sunday homecoming at the Christian church with Epworth League in the evening. Fairview Sunday School meets at 9 a m followed by preaching at 10 a m. Hilton Sunday School at 10 30 a m with preaching at 11 80 a m. Epworth League and preaching in the night.
Union office reports Leonard Fletcher former Moravia high school student married a young woman at Malvern Iowa about three weeks ago. Her name is not learned here. They will reside on a farm with her father. Friends here congratulate them.
The Iconium churches hold their annual homecoming at the Christian church next Sunday August 6. The union Sunday School starts at 10 o'clock. Rev Burton Tarr of Beacon New York will lead the morning service. A noon basket dinner follows with attendees asked to bring baskets and table service. An afternoon program features orchestra music talks by former pastors Mystic quartet readings.
Mr and Mrs W P Davis with Mr and Mrs H R Gilliland depart Sunday for a trip to the New York World’s Fair stopping in Iowa City and South Bend Indiana to visit relatives then Cleveland for the seventh World Poultry Congress and exposition. They plan Niagara Falls Buffalo Ontario Canada and a voyage along the Hudson to Albany, aiming to reach the fair. Cy and Mrs J F Gray of Melcher Iowa visited last Thursday at the Cummins home and plan to spend winter in the south while the doctor hopes to return to practice next year. Mrs J W Albert was called to Bloomfield by her sister Mrs Frank Stoffel’s illness. Mrs Stella Dooley of Glenwood Missouri accompanied her. Don Blackman returns from an east coast trip via Washington and a Niagara Falls visit, with a stop at the New York World’s Fair.
J. L. Patrick of Centerville spent the week end here with relatives.
Seventy eight women attended the Galloping Tea in the church parlor on Friday afternoon. The event was sponsored by the Ladies Aid society led by Mrs. B. R. Easter. Cars were provided by Mrs. T. J. Zike, Mrs Claude Hawk, Miss Wilma Ven Zante, and Mrs. Harald Mason. Refreshments were served.
The menu lists Swiss steak with brown gravy and green lima beans tomatoes cold slaw cottage cheese hot biscuits jelly apple cobbler tea and coffee, offering a hearty home style meal.
Mr and Mrs C M McFatridge and Billy left Saturday morning for a motor journey to the west They aim to visit Tacoma Washington then travel south along the coast to California and return home via the southern route.
Mrs. E. M. Coltrain leads the festivals antiques and relics display in Moravia. Old and new contrasts will appear in windows from various businesses with papers, dishes, wedding dresses, and photos sought. Public urged to donate items early to complete displays during Festival week.
Moravia and surrounding area received much needed rainfall on Tuesday and Tuesday night. A sudden shower dropped about a quarter inch in the afternoon, followed by a further three quarters inch that night, bringing beneficial moisture to the locality.
The Progressive Club and families enjoyed a Sunday evening picnic at Centerville Park as a courtesy to the A. G. Broshar family of Waterloo.
A new WPA project at Moravia school employs 35 to 40 men to remove plaster ceilings and replace with acoustic herringbone boards. Two outside entrances will be added, new cement floors laid in shower and toilet areas, and work aimed to finish before September 4. Superintendent Geo McNutt and foreman Harry Stocker lead, with a total cost under 3500 dollars, mostly funded by the local school.
