Iowa Farm Land Prices Rise Two Dollars Per Acre

Iowa farm land values increased by two dollars per acre between March 1955 and March 1956, with most of the rise occurring in summer 1955. Prices then dipped about one dollar per acre from November 1955 to March 1956, influenced by drought and hog prices. USDA cites land as a safe long term investment and ongoing farmer demand to add to farms as key factors. Weather may nudge values down slightly in the western Corn Belt.

Farmers Reluctant to Expand Despite Cost Theory

A survey by Earl O. Heady of Iowa State College shows farmers doubt larger operations will yield enough benefits. They fear price and production uncertainties, preferring a farm size that ensures a satisfactory income and personal security rather than higher efficiency.
