Albia hosts one of the area’s largest 4-H fairs starting Sunday with 142 head baby beef 21 beef heifers 40 dairy heifers 54 swine 90 sheep 27 rabbits and other poultry. The program runs Sunday to Thursday with livestock judging, exhibits, demonstrations, rodeo, parades, an amateur show, a hat parade, a livestock sale and a 4-H dance.
Mary Ellen Condra of Moravia high school majorette completed a week of baton twirling instruction at Kirksville Missouri during July 14 to 19 at Northeast State Teachers College. Instructors Mary Evan Thurman and Jean Becker of Ohio were baton winners in many contests. Lessons cover twirling strutting aerial marching and supervised practice on season. Interested individuals should contact Mary Ellen at the school house August 1. Last year the marching band had eight baton twirlers leading the band in many marching contests.
Mrs Bertha Luge was delightfully surprised at a birthday dinner held in her honor at the Richard Morrison home on Sunday July 28. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Bill Jase Billie Jo Patty Lou Jim and Mike Mrs Lela Judge Pat Sharon and Linda Mr and Mrs Raymond Ashby Mrs Bertha Luse and the hosts Mr and Mrs Richard Morrison Mona Main returned home Tuesday from St Joseph hospital.
A meeting to plan the 1957 Fall Festival will be held at the Moravia community building at 8:00 this Thursday evening. Everyone is invited. The festival dates were set last fall for September 12 13 and 14, per Russell Hughes president.
Appanoose county fair awards highlight textile prizes for Mrs. Cody Luse and others from Moravia while baked foods and canning honors go to Olive Tarbell Janice Vickrey Nellie Williams and Harley Tisue. School display ribbon winners include Pleasant Hill Iconium and multiple Tarbells Argo and McAninch names. In 4-H, Taylorette booth earns blue ribbon. several youths gain placings in foods nutrition and records. Allan Dooley wins both 4-H and open class livestock championships. other local youths compete in FFA and livestock events.
Moravia loses 3-2 to Sigourney in the district softball final at Moulton. Both teams total four hits. Moravia hit two homers by John Grenfell and Bill Broshar but left bases empty. Bud McDanel and Dick Johnson pitched with DuVall catching. Earlier Moravia beat Centerville Baptist 28-2 at the local diamond. No games are scheduled next week due to player vacations.
Infant son of Mr and Mrs William C Shultz of Moravia died shortly after birth at Ottumwa hospital. Survived by parents two sisters Cheryl Jane and Julie Lynn grandparents G F Shultz Ottumwa and Mrs Charles Foster Des Moines great grandmother Mrs Jennie Pollard Moravia. Graveside services were held at Shaul Cemetery with Rev LaVerne Morris in charge.
The monthly Fellowship gathering occurred Wednesday evening at the First Christian church with Mrs. Marshall Perry leading devotions and Gorer Stocker on violin for the hymn. Harold Van Dorin screened moving pictures of a Canada trip. Mrs. Mettie Roland led games. refreshments were provided by Mrs. Rebecca Milleman and Mrs. W. C. Bivin. August committee includes Mrs. Birdie Main, Mrs. Gamer Stocker, and Joyce Harris for the program. Mrs. O. D. DuVall and Mrs. Frank Paxston to handle refreshments.
Mora four churches unite for August Sunday evening services at the city park using public address system stage and piano. Each service at 8 o clock with park seating or cars and offerings fund a 16 mm sound projector for the churches.
Moravia youths organize a 16 member bicycle club on Wednesday July 24 electing Ronnie Woodward as secretary treasurer and a five member council Jimmie Smith Steven King Jimmie Elison Nathan King and Terry Tuttle. Todd Harp chosen mayor with a police group and inspectors appointed. A bylaws meeting is set for Monday July 29 at 7 30 pm at the fire station with Merle Smith Max McDonough and Fred Cousins to assist.
The annual Tisue reunion took place Sunday at Moravia park with twenty eight attendees. Since last year there was one death and three births including a great grandson of Mrs. Gus Tisue and grandchildren of several families. Guests listed include Clarence Potts family Lloyd Brown Elmer Vance and multiple Tisues. Next year’s reunion is planned for the last Sunday in July at Moravia park.
Rev. and Mrs. LaVern Smith and family visited Earl Smith in Knoxville and shopped in Oskaloosa. Drew Goodale Elsie Pool from Davenport and John L Stevens with granddaughter visited Mrs. Fannie Rutherford near Houston Texas from July 22 to 31. Goodeles formerly lived east of Moravia. Frank Heckman and Harl Whicker of Lay Colorado called on Mrs. O G Woodward and guest Mrs. Ella Cridlebaugh. Raymond Ashby and wife left for a few days in Wisconsin. Connie and Joyce Walter visited grandmother Mrs. J R Callen.
A Sunday evening storm brought extreme winds and heavy rain across Mora. Telephones and power lines were disrupted, trees and limbs blocked roads, and property damage occurred including a pony killed by lightning and roofs torn from a garage. Rain totals ranged from 2% to over 4 inches, with scattered crop and vehicle damage.
Vosburg School District files quo warranto equity action in Monroe County District Court challenging its inclusion in the Moravia Community School District after a merger election. Wayne Thompson, as Vosburg president, signed the petition. Moravia must answer within 20 days. Attorneys are Monroe County Attorney Frank Karpan and Alfred M. Pabst.
Mrs Neal Burton called to Ottumwa hospital after a Sunday wreck near Grant Tadlock home. Neal Burton suffers a severe eye injury with facial cuts. surgery attempted to save sight. Mrs Evelyn Steinbeck and two children bruised and released. Steinbeck driver bruised. Each car damaged about 300 dollars. The other driver charged with reckless driving.

The annual Wilson reunion is scheduled for Sunday August 18 at Morayia Park. Mardeena White serves as secretary and announces details for attendees.
The Lockman reunion is scheduled for the second Sunday in August, August 11. A basket dinner will be served at noon.
Sarah Sincox born June 16 1869 in Councy Hill Illinois died July 26 1957 aged BB years 1 month 10 days. She married Ulysses Grant Sincox Sept 6 1891 in Hazel Green Wisconsin and had Erwin Emma Johnson Wilbur Elroy who died before her. They lived in Foster Iowa Moravia Iowa area. Survived by two children three sisters four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral held Sunday 2:00 PM Turner funeral home Rev John Grenfell officiating burial Moravia Cemetery.
The Band Mothers will serve ice cream and cake in the park Saturday evening August 3. Those unable to attend are asked to furnish ice cream or cake.
Mrs Merle Smith was taken to the Ottumwa hospital Monday and underwent emergency surgery. Her condition is reported as satisfactory. For cards she is in room 222, Ottumwa hospital.

Dorothy Turner thanks everyone for cards flowers and sun shine basket during her illness noting deep appreciation for their thoughtfulness and support.
A son, Timothy Jay, was born July 27 to Mr and Mrs C W Ralston of Conrad. Mrs Ralston, formerly Lucile Shelquist of Moravia, announced the birth.
