Oil rights in old coal leases under Monroe County dispute
The court notes mineral rights in older Monroe County leases must be read by the intent at signing. From 1890 to 1917 oil and gas were not contemplated, so terms like coal and other minerals relate to mined minerals only. The decision treats surface easements for mining pits and shafts as part of the contract based on context.

Oil and Gas Lease Rights Clarified in Early Title Case
A court concludes that despite coal and mineral clauses in old leases, the current landowner holds exclusive rights to oil and gas, applying the doctrine of ejusdem generis and noting absence of oil and gas provisions, royalties, or production equipment in the prior instruments. The ruling hinges on parties' intent and surrounding circumstances.
