A columnist warns against perceived Communist influence at a State Press Convention. He argues government programs expand by design, forcing taxes and shifting income, and imagines a future where a former Appanoose count resident lives on a state collective farm. He laments loss of local autonomy and predicts top‑down control over farming choices and production inputs.
Citizens debate crop prices and per bushel earnings while government deductions loom. In Center Ville a St Joseph hospital meeting reported the maternity ward completely vacant, a rare scene for the facility as officials note high costs and widespread business concerns.
Jerry O'Donnell fell from a tractor while harrowing on Saturday and was dragged before cries for help were heard. He was rescued by the family and escaped with only minor bruises and shock. He is a sixth grade student at Moulton Udell School, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill O'Donnell.
Regular Udell P T A meeting in the gym elected officers for the coming year. Enid Kirby was named President with Phillis Clark Vice President Anna Burkland Secretary and Fancheon Pannebecker Treasurer. 8th graders presented the play Fresh Fariable Winds and first grade mothers served cookies and coffee.

Families such as Kelley, Cross, Cox, Harvel, and Scott are mentioned with multiple weekend and weekday visits, plus a Des Moines science fair trip by Marlys Fenton.
Ottumwa couple Mr and Mrs James Farnsworth and family were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Harold Fenton. Margaret and Kay visited with Delilia Fenton Saturday evening.
The older 4 H members, aged 14 and over, will gather April 17 at 7:30 pm in the Agricultural Building Centerville. A committee of 4 H members will plan the program advancing the clothing project first discussed in February.
Attendees are told that refreshments will be served at the end of the meeting, with attendees invited to stay for light snacks and beverages following formal business.
The Taylor Toilers 4-H club met Monday with vice-president Ralph McDonough presiding. Eight members answered A Good Grooming Habit. Camp plans included health camp leadership camp and a short course. Argo joined health camp and Jerry Bablenz Donald West for leadership camp. A county quail project report was given by Ted McDonough. A talk Lightning and Lightning Rod Safety was delivered by Jerry Bablenz. The next meeting will be at the Jack McDonough home with refreshments served.
