More than 45,000 veterans began Federal service in February 1946, announced by the U S Civil Service Commission. Within the Eighth Region Minnesota Iowa Nebraska North and South Dakota accounted for about 875 placements, as regional director Rena Smith noted. Since January 1943 total placements exceed 654,000, led by the War Department with 18,900 and the Navy with 12,600. many veterans also joined the Postal Service and Veterans Administration.
