The Cen terville based thirteen year old Kathryn Rea placed second in a statewide contest held in Indianola among 16 of Tawa's best younger musicians. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Rea, formerly residents here, and local friends celebrate her achievement.
The Moravia Union Office reports receipt of the Soil Survey of Appanoose County pamphlet published by the United States Department of Agriculture. Mailed by Congressman Thorn ton, it covers early county history, climate, soil and crops. Individuals may request the pamphlet by writing Congressman Thurston.
A group gathers at Uncle George Lloyds home in Iconium to mark his 81st birthday with a noon chicken noodle roast duck and oyster dressing dinner plus angel food cake. Relatives from Plana Red Oak Centerville and local households attend. he maintains his own home despite age. Further, Mrs E F Oehler hosts a six o clock dinner for Mr and Mrs H W Reich and Keith Reich. Wednesday callers include Mr and Mrs Clarence Van Dorin and Ida Van Dorin of Centerville visiting Mrs Myrtle Foster west of Moravis.
Richard Sneed took first in the oratorical division at the Pre-District Declamatory Contest in Bloomfield, defeating rival Hugh Strickler of Cincinnati. Edward Burchett and John Sharp also won in drama and humor. Eight schools were represented. Sneed advances to the District Contest in Toledo, Iowa, Friday night, April th. Miss Gertie Bayer hosted a birthday party for Miss Roma Foster at Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Bayer’s home with many guests, games, music, and pink and white refreshments.
Moravia Iowa council regular session notes present members Blumenstock Schreiner Burns Smith Winsler Mayor Minnes and clerk. March 8 minutes read and approved as read. Bills approved by the claim committee and read by the clerk.
The Moravia area ledger lists salaries for officials and staff including Minnes and Winsler, plus street and lighting expenses. Treasurer notes show fund balances, light fund overdrawn, and cash on hand as of March 27, 1928. new officers sworn in as mayor and council convene for equalization.
Easter time theme appears in a formal town record noting Easter as a symbol of spring and resurrection. The mayor and council appoint committees for street, cemetery, park, audit, health, and utilities and install a fire department including chief and assistant. A motion authorizes depositing town funds and approves a bond. Meeting adjourned with votes recorded.
The Annual Egg Roast will be held at the I C C F Hall Friday evening April 6. All Odd Fellows and Re bekaha and their families are cordially invited. Bring eggs. Frank Swaim, Sec. Troy Glick was taken very sick Tuesday and rushed to Ottumwa hospital for appendicitis operation.
The Moravia Methodist community celebrated the dedication of its new church on Sunday April 1 with three services. Dr W R Keeney preached the dedicatory sermon and Dr James E Coons spoke in the afternoon. Music by Pearl Turner Mrs Ferrel Albert and others accompanied the events. The cost is about 27000 with most pledges raised and further finance details due next week. Easter plans include services and a Bible School session. Rev D Winfield Thompson invites union and prayer meetings.
Church of Christ announces Sunday School at 10 a.m. with Primary Class leading opening. Parents invited to bring children. Brother Evans to deliver a fiscal message. Evening service at 7:30 p.m. Ladies Aid to meet Wednesday afternoon. Bazaar and food sale last Saturday praised. thanks extended to all contributors. Choir practice Thursday evening. Mrs Geo Winska and Miss Rubye Wineler visited in Albla Saturday evening.
Main Bros announce a complete line of groceries and their meat business will operate as Cash and Carry Grocery and Meat Market. They drop delivery, go cash only, cut overhead, invite public to inspect the new store on opening day Saturday April 7th and establish a produce buying station for cream eggs and poultry.
M E Church First Auxiliary hosts a dinner in the new basement on Friday. Committees join to serve as the Ladies Aid adds another 35 toward a total of 85, supporting orphans and ongoing church projects. Easter services planned for next Sunday with school program and Epworth League events.
Two men shot firers, filmer Clouse and Phillips, died in an explosion at the Carbon Coal Co. mine in Lockman last Thursday afternoon. Clouse likely died from blast force, Phillips from afterdamps. both found in separate sections, neither mutilated. Rescue crew reached the scene about an hour later.
