Fire at Whitehead Farm Home Friday

Moravia fire department responded to a blaze at the B. F. Whitehead residence on Friday. A roof fire with significant upper floor damage was sparked by a roof spark, with most losses insured. Neighbors moved furniture from the first floor as water damaged ceilings appeared downstairs.

FFA Banquet Awards Honor Members Across Classes

Friday banquet presented three annual scholarships for top grades among FFA members in freshman sophomore and junior senior groups. Newt Long Injured Eye in Wire Accident

Newt Long, former living sones of Moravia, sustained a serious injury to his left eye when a piece of number nine wire broke and cut his eyeball and lid. He was taken to Ottumwa where four stitches were placed in the eye and six in the lid. He returned to Ottumwa for further treatment on Tuesday.

Former army man enlists in navy band

Carl Richard Hiatt, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Hiatt, a former army man, has been accepted for enlistment in the U S Navy band. He will attend the school of music in Washington DC. His family will stay in Ottumwa for now until he is stationed somewhere permanently.

Earl Clark Seeks Medical Treatment in Albia Hospital

Earl Clark entered Monroe county hospital at Albia on Wednesday for medical treatment after several weeks of illness. Nearby residents James Kaster and Mr. and Mrs. Veril Kaster have moved to their farm southwest of town from the Charles Broshar property. Miss Blanche and Wayne Harshfield of Ottumwa were Sunday dinner guests with their sister, and Mrs. Boyer accompanied them home for a two day visit. Miss Mary Rose Main of Davenport will come Thursday to spend Easter with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Almont Main. The Band Mothers club will meet today at the school house instead of Friday due to no school on Good Friday.

Ottumwa resident Mr. Elmer R. Carr arranged the Iowa Chapter National Railway Historical Society excursion to Moravia on April 13. The run begins 8:30 am at Centerville car barn, travels via branch lines to coal mines with picture stops, lasting about three hours. Moravia Topples Udell in 12th Inning Drive

Moravia High School outlasted Udell 2-1 in twelve innings as Tomlin reached second on a hit and Lindley drove in the winning run. Udell’s only run came on a catcher’s over throw error.
