Moravia fire department responded to a blaze at the B. F. Whitehead residence on Friday. A roof fire with significant upper floor damage was sparked by a roof spark, with most losses insured. Neighbors moved furniture from the first floor as water damaged ceilings appeared downstairs.
Mr and Mrs B F Whitehead and family express gratitude to Moravia fire department for prompt efficient work in fighting their fire and thank friends and neighbors who assisted during and after the incident.
Local residents from Ottumwa and Des Moines visited area homes Friday through Sunday. Floyd Caster and Clarence Caster hosted attendees including Mr and Mrs E C Caster and Mrs Josie Charity who returned home after two days in Monroe county hospital for observation.
The Moravia Rainbow girls will hold their regular meeting on Wednesday evening April 9 at Fraif, the Ma Seitte fall, with Mary fille Cohdra and Nancy Boblenz listed as Recorder.
Mr and Mrs Jess Gladfelder express gratitude for the 50 plus greetings received on their 55th wedding anniversary on March 22. They say they enjoyed and appreciated the warm messages from friends and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Burton are the parents of a son born Saturday March 29 at Monroe County Hospital. He weighed 8 lbs at birth and has been named Randy Ray. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Weston Daughtery of Blakesburg and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Robinson.
Friday banquet presented three annual scholarships for top grades among FFA members in freshman sophomore and junior senior groups. Winners include Bennie Tarbell Glen Phillips and Charles Argo with judging honors to Billy Main Bill Rogers and David West. Other awards cited include supervised farming to John Murdy and multiple foundation and leadership honors to several members.
Mr. and Mrs. Mex Hammond and family of Ottumwa plus relatives visited Mrs. Ruth Hammond and others in Green Castle Indiana. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Layman Hetler Lily May from Green Castle and former Iconium resident Mrs. Hetler. Nearby, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvan VanDorin and family called on Clarence Banyen’s home in Berwick with Merle Walter and family, Zella Thompson and Gale Thompson in Adel later that day with several other local families.

Maie Waughop died March 31 1958 at Golden Age Nursing Home Centerville Iowa born February 5 1873 on a Washington Illinois farm. She lived in California with an uncle then moved to Moravia in 1912 with brother Bud to run a hotel for 20 years. She belonged to Moravia E U B church and American Legion Auxiliary and aided missionary society. Survived by brother Bud Waughop Center ville IA and four nieces. Funeral April 2 at 2 00 p.m. Turner Funeral Home Rev Lynn King. Burial Moravia Cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Roy Argo express gratitude to friends and neighbors for cards calls flowers and meals during Vicki illness.
Moravia public concert features nine small groups bound for the state contest, with trombone and saxophone solos, clarinet solo, six vocal solos, girls sextette, and two trios. Vocal and instrumental performances lasting about an hour and a half starting at 7:00 p.m. on Monday April 7.
Newt Long, former living sones of Moravia, sustained a serious injury to his left eye when a piece of number nine wire broke and cut his eyeball and lid. He was taken to Ottumwa where four stitches were placed in the eye and six in the lid. He returned to Ottumwa for further treatment on Tuesday.
The E T C club gathered Thursday afternoon at Mrs Leonard Palmer's home for a plant and bulb exchange. Mrs Palmer led games and Ruth Hammond won the door prize in a friendly, social session.
Carl Richard Hiatt, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Hiatt, a former army man, has been accepted for enlistment in the U S Navy band. He will attend the school of music in Washington DC. His family will stay in Ottumwa for now until he is stationed somewhere permanently.

Earl Clark entered Monroe county hospital at Albia on Wednesday for medical treatment after several weeks of illness. Nearby residents James Kaster and Mr. and Mrs. Veril Kaster have moved to their farm southwest of town from the Charles Broshar property. Miss Blanche and Wayne Harshfield of Ottumwa were Sunday dinner guests with their sister, and Mrs. Boyer accompanied them home for a two day visit. Miss Mary Rose Main of Davenport will come Thursday to spend Easter with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Almont Main. The Band Mothers club will meet today at the school house instead of Friday due to no school on Good Friday.
Dewey's Place will remain closed all day on Easter Sunday April 6.
Ottumwa resident Mr. Elmer R. Carr arranged the Iowa Chapter National Railway Historical Society excursion to Moravia on April 13. The run begins 8:30 am at Centerville car barn, travels via branch lines to coal mines with picture stops, lasting about three hours. Enthusiasts from across Iowa, Canada expected. orange and green historical car to be used.
Moravia High School outlasted Udell 2-1 in twelve innings as Tomlin reached second on a hit and Lindley drove in the winning run. Udell’s only run came on a catcher’s over throw error. Pfannebecker pitched for Moravia and Tomlin Salla for Udell. A return game is planned for Thursday weather permitting.
Mrs Wayne Clark received burns to head and face from scalding water while washing and was treated at Monroe county hospital for several days. Rev LaVerne Smith and daughter visited his ill daughter Janet in University hospital Iowa City with rheumatic fever and heart condition before returning home. Jerry Main and Duane Proctor, Penn College Oska loost students, are home for spring vacation with families. Randy Ray Burton and Donnie Burton returned to Albia from Monroe county hospital and moved to Albia with Ralph Robinson and Johnson families assisting.
Mrs Leonard Palmer had a tonsillectomy at St Josephs hospital in Centerville on Monday. She was returned home Tuesday to recuperate. Mrs Wendell Murdy visited the Palmer home on Tuesday.
Geneva McDanel thanks everyone for letters gifts and cards while she was in the hospital in Iowa City, expressing appreciation for the thoughtful support.

The Churches Evangelical United Brethren Church under Rev Lynn J Hing will attend a mass meeting at Centerville on Sunday evening to hear Rev Bob Richards. Sunday school starts 10 a m and morning worship at 11 00 a m. Youth depart from the church Saturday at 7 15 p m for the Centerville mass youth meeting at Centerville high school auditorium.
Grace Methodist Church outlines Easter events with Rev John Grenfell as pastor and Delmar Dowd as Sunday School superintendent. Services include 6:00 am sunrise, 10:00 am Sunday school, 11:00 am worship, 6:30 pm MYF, and 7:30 pm evening services. County Ministerial Association events in Centerville feature Rev Bob Richards at 8:00 pm. family night set for Wednesday April 9 at 6:30 pm.

Visiting Sunday were Mr and Mrs Arnold Burnett of Newton, Mr and Mrs John Spencer of Albia, Mrs Paul Spencer, Mr and Mrs Johnnie Spencer and Dennis, Mr and Mrs Paul Spencer and children, and Mr and Mrs Ralph Davis and daughters.

Moravia and Munterville exchanges to be bought, combined, and upgraded to dial service with new central offices at Blakesburg and Moravia. About 130 new farm connections and 896 existing subscribers to receive multi party dial lines. Cutover expected in a 1959 second quarter.
