Christmas news from a bustling Indiana town

Tipton Hires Music Supervisor Harris Vail

Harris Vail has accepted the position of supervisor of music for Tipton city schools. He is a graduate of the Indianapolis Conservatory of Music and has studied at the American Conservatory in Chicago. He was offered the Tipton post after being invited to graduate from Chicago.

Death of C Schurmann at Home on West Clarrison Street

The resident C Schurmann died after a three week illness at his home on West Clarrison Street. Funeral services are held at the home Friday morning with burial to follow in Indianapolis.

Ye Old Time Spelling School At High School Held

A Friday evening spelling event at the high school assembly hall drew crowds of youths and adults. Sumner Sellers of seventh grade won the grade contest after fifty five minutes. Alf Richardson triumphed in the old McGuffy contest with the word sacrilegious, outspelling rivals including Mrs Mintie Hiatt and Frank Bass.

Financial report of Spelling School

The door receipts of the evening totaled 22 65 with individual contributions of 9c 25c and 1 making the library fund reach 24 00. A Christmas gathering at several homes followed with prominent local residents in attendance. A full line of heaters cook stoves and ranges at G A Kellers.

Christmas vacation notes from Helena Hamilton school

Christmas vacation began Monday and lasts until January second. Miss Sparks visited home in Pennsylvania for the holidays. The Friday evening library opening on the 15th was well attended with music and addresses. Teachers including Miss Way Miss Trank and K Davis left for Terre Haute Orleans and Bedford for the break. Spelling match drew a large crowd with Sumner Sellars and A G Richardson proving their skills. Miss Clyda Thompson, recently ill, is improving. Seniors plan to begin theses in the new year. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
