Pioneering Montpelier resident Hiram Tewksbury dies at 84
Hiram Tewksbury longtime Montpelier resident died at his West Green Street home Sunday morning after a brief illness. Born December 11, 1840 in Summit County Ohio he arrived in Blackford County in 1841 and built the family homestead before settling in town He was a major landowner and prominent stock raiser with strong ties to farming organizations He was twice married first to Mary Jane Harris who died in 1877 and then to Cecelia Conley with three children from the second marriage Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 2 PM at the family home with Rev B G Shinn of Hartford City officiating Interment at Woodlawn cemetery.

Hoanting For Guerrillas Gold Treasure Near Denver
In 1864 Confederate Captain James Reynolds led a guerrilla band that robbed the Buckskin coach on the old South Park trail near Denver securing about $40,000. Reynolds and five men were captured after the next day’s attack, two escaped, allegedly dropping the treasure at the battle site where it has never been found. Recent Denver departures have sent search parties to locate the stash.
