Voters showed little interest in the amendment election with under 2,000 votes countywide. Amendment One passed 1202 to 612, winning in all but Monon and Cass precincts. The remaining twelve amendments failed in all precincts except West Point No 1 and select voting in Jackson No 3 Princeton 3 and Big Creek 2.
Indianapolis contributor presents five complete copies of The Daily Democrat dating from August 22-26 1892. Published in the county during the Teachers Institute, it featured a sprightly column quarto format. The Herald previously tried a daily during fair week but no copies survive.
A large White County turnout at the 32nd annual Church of God conference in Headlee celebrated services and chose Rev. C. H. Holaday as Field Superintendent for the next year. Ministers were assigned to Logansport New Castle Allen Bethel Pious Chapel Lockport Zion Bethal Pleasant Ridge Chicago Corner and other posts.
A deed of assignment filed in the Recorder's office names Mark L. Thompson of Lafayette as trustee. The 120 acre Round Grove Township farm and some personal property are created as the assignment for the benefit of the farmer's creditors.
The notice promotes items at THE FAIR including school hosiery and ribbons and offers loans on farm land at reasonable rates. It mentions T. W. O'Connor and dates around 3-24-41 with a prompt to buy dinner pails at THE FAIR.
Representatives from Jasper Newton Benton and White counties converge on Monticello for the Twentieth District Rebekahs convention. About three hundred members are expected with a business session in the afternoon and initiation of local candidates in the evening. Mrs Laura Day district president will preside and Eudora Lodge will provide degree work.
Following a Sunday afternoon accident near Veedersburg Mrs. George A. Stuart of Chicago was killed instantly. Her body was brought to this city for burial with services by Rev. Elvin Daniels at Stephan undertaking parlors. Interment occurred at Monticell cemetery. The deceased lived with her parents here years ago. her father worked for the Grimes & Roderver plunding firm on North Main Street. The family later moved to Kokomo in 1900 and then to Chicago.
On September 1 Richard R Carlson son of Charles G Carlson and Miss Hattie Vernise Spencer daughter of James Spencer were married at the Methodist parsonage Rev T J Bassett officiating. Mrs Carlson is a White and Spencer Counties teacher and niece of Mrs Berths Nevis. Mr Carlson is a Monon Township farmer. They depart for a weeklong motor trip to Illinois then plan a home on a farm near Monon.
Mio and Mrs. Alvin Gay quietly celebrate their forty fifth anniversary at a country home south of Valparaiso. They entertained a few friends and received many congratulations. Four children and one grandson, Floyd Horne of South Bend, form the family. Mrs. Gay is related to the Becker family of Battle Ground and Alvin Gay is known in White County.
County schools opened with a new Buffalo high school enrolling thirty students. A two year course is offered with eighteen freshmen. The building nears completion and BE. B. Wetherow the state inspector says it will be accredited by year’s end.
Monticello captured the Wolcott Monticello golf match held at the Country Club last Friday. J. M Winters of Wolcott finished second with a 114, while E. L. Gardner of the city won with 105.
Justi received yarns for knitting and crocheting and questions why a sweater is not started. The Fair boasts plentiful funds and a new line of Ladies wool dresses inviting customers to view the collection.
The Farmers Association faced a near weather disaster at their Saturday picnic but sun reappeared by noon and crowds grew to about a thousand. Maurice Douglass spoke briefly on the association’s road ahead, a community sing delighted attendees, and a Liberty Township versus Round Grove Township ball game ended 7–0 with solid plays by Roy Fross Fraser and Schofield. Liberty Township drew the largest delegation and energized the crowd with the Liberty Bell in evidence.
State of Indiana v Jach Caldwell saw seven charges after two more were added Friday. Caldwell pleaded guilty to five counts and paid 98 dollars 75 cents in fines. One count was dismissed and he was bound over to the circuit court on the oilier bond 500 dollars. The Haynes speedster taken by authorities remains held for the circuit court trial on unlawful possession of intoxicating liquor.
A Christian Sundays School class forms a new group named Christian Nights with motto Always Present. Temporary officers elected last Thursday night include President Emory Fulks Vice president Bernard Howell Secretary John Van Meter and Treasurer Roy Bogue who will serve until the October meeting when permanent officers are chosen.
A large display of Middies and Middy Suits along with wash goods wool and flannel showcased at the fair. The exhibit highlights practical schoolwear and sturdy fabrics as part of the event’s offerings.

E R Barimester L Isley Edward Cobb and G O Weaver of Indianapolis were arrested two miles west of Monticello after a disturbance. They faced fines for operating a car with cutout and for intoxication and paid the penalties before leaving for Indianapolis.

A blaze started by an oil stove in the Cullen residence was checked by gravel haulers and neighbors, saving most of the home. The window casing was damaged and replaced, with insurance covering the loss. Samuel Weaver visited the Hall household for several days last week.
School opened here Monday to good attendance and high hopes for a prosperous year. Leading staff includes Supt. W. F. Neel and Principal H. L. Miss Leta Ulrey hosted a wiener roast Monday evening September 5 at her home. Participants included Hazel, Walter and George Mattix, Lora and Orlo Mason, Vera, Dale and Homer Frye, Dorothy and Morris Cosgray, Dora Imler, Wayne Morris, John Yount, Edna Stieman, Elmo Rose, Mary, Elsie and Catherine Smith, Ethel Davidson, Jerry Wickersham, Harold Jenkins, Ola and Minnie Turnipseed, Mamie and William Musall, and Raymond Farmer. The gathering was enjoyed by all.
Newton Funk, longtime resident, died at home Monday after a stroke endured while traveling to Michigan. He remained unconscious until death. sons George Joe and Vinton traveled from the south to Paw Paw Michigan, where he was taken, and an ambulance from Winamae brought him home arriving Thursday.
Mrs. Abagail Tedford died at the home of her daughter in Idaville after a lingering illness. A private funeral was held and burial was in the local cemetery. She was about seventy three and survived by four daughters and two sons with several grandchildren.
Relatives gathered Sunday at J. E. Mitchell home to honor his seventy third birthday with a noon dinner and social afternoon. It also marked the second birthday of Clifford Park, a crest-son of Mr. Mitchell, with a list of Battle Ground and Talbot attendees joining in the celebration.
Brookston and surrounding counties plan a three day Agricultural and Industrial Exposition from September 29 to October 1 with Old Settlers' Day on the final date. Exhibits include horse cattle hogs poultry corn and horticulture from White Carroll Jasper Benton and Tippecanoe counties alongside Purdue University displays. Noted speakers demonstrations free attractions a masquerade Friday night and a combined Brookston-Chalmers band are featured.
Supt Harry E Elder prepares Monticello schools for opening next Monday. Teachers are arriving to begin work. the remainder will arrive by week end and regular classes start Tuesday.
Morroco residents Mr and Mrs Jesse Hawthorne and Mr and Mrs Ray Hawthorne of Shawnee Mound share hosting duties with Mr and Mrs Edward Slater and son Harley. Haskell Dismore and son Harold of Walcott join Clyde Park and son Clifford with Mr and Mrs Robert Mitchell and daughter Martha Alice, plus J E Mitchell and daughter Marie and son Rol.
The Sterner-Sterner reunion gathered eighty relatives and guests at the Ergess Woods home in Brooks Indiana on Sunday September 4. After a picnic dinner on the lawn attendees visited and played sports. A business meeting elected Maurice Sterner of Fulton president and Mrs W M Sterner Jr of Chalmers secretary treasurer. An annual reunion was voted and a committee will set 22 arrangements. Attendees traveling from afar included Mrs John Sholl Mrs Stewart Arentz and Paul Zepp of Hanover Pennsylvania.
Taxpayers from all townships gathered with the County Council and Board of Commissioners to press for lower tax levies. A committee urged cuts in road repair funding and the county’s new road program, with a final reduction from sixteen to ten cents per hundred dollars, about 56000. The meeting formed a permanent taxpayers association led by A F Nagel. Protests may be filed with the State Tax Commissioners within the month.
Reynolds school opened September 5 with 183 enrollees. Three new teachers join the corps: Miss O Mara in music art and domestic science from Hillsdale Michigan, Miss Faye Shumaker in English geometry and chemistry, Mrs W B Schlademan in history Latin and algebra. Supt H J Reid handles physiology hygiene and grammar. Clarence Fauber teaches seventh and eighth grades and manual training, Mr Stockdale fifth and sixth, Miss Friend third and fourth, Miss Hilda Heimlich first and second. Most township children ride to Reynolds by two autos and four horse hacks, all except one school taught by Ola Scowden.

The State Bank of Chalmers launches a contest to guess the yearly total in dollars and cents of cream checks cashed. Prizes of 5, 2, and 1 dollar will be awarded to the three most accurate guesses. The contest runs from last Thursday to September 30, with winners announced October 1.
The Baptist church of Chalmers will meet at the church on Friday evening September 16 to elect one trustee and Mrs. J. W. Ward will serve as Clerk. Also advertised a sale of hair ribbons for school wear at THE FAIR priced at 25 cents per yard.
