Lightning struck a transformer near the A J H McNeill residence. Thomas Kingsley Jr of Cascade served with United States artillery in France as a sergeant who enjoyed army life. Harry Rodman appointed Eclipse Lumber Monticello manager succeeding Lee Martin who joined the U S army. Rodman had led a Plainfield yard. Dairy Day observed in Monticello on the 11th with Governor Harding delivering the principal address and others including W G Barney and F L Clark. Public school children attended the afternoon exercises and marched past Governor Harding led by the Scotch Grove band led by E D Miller as superintendent of schools at that time.

Girls club lists named sopranos altos and friends, while boys club lists first second tenors baritones basses. The mixed chorus combines members from both groups.
The Monticello High School marching band unveiled the Scrap Metal Parade last Friday. Drum major Loretta Gerdes led the group with baton majorette Marion Deischer and new twirlers Joyce Wismeier Alice Clark Janis Grimes Eloise Wright Dorothy Rose Bartlett Gail Huibregtse. The Girls Athletics Association outlines plans for the year with two initiations in fall and spring due to few members. Meetings are the second Wednesday monthly starting September 16, and a picnic for new initiates on September 23 is planned. Miss Humpke is sponsor.

Monti High conducted a scrap drive on September 11 with fifteen junior boys and nine junior girls, plus fifteen senior boys and four teen girls. Boys collected and loaded scrap while girls ran the canteen. Mr. Shannon’s physics class assigned a cubic centimeter model, and Dick Abel asked about size.

The annual activity ticket sale opened Monday for Them sponsored events. The ticket grants access to four football games six to nine basketball games lyceum numbers plays and two operettas at reduced prices. On Monday September 7 the twenty hour first aid course for juniors and seniors opened under Dr Earl DeShaw. Mrs Selma DeShaw led the first lessons and the group split into three sections for practical work using the Red Cross text. Grades come from five areas including artificial respiration class work tourniquets and a final October exam. The class helps meet Jones county north half quota toward 450 trained first aiders.
Betty Gould has chosen twelve girls to form a double sextet for special functions. The six sopranos are Irma Schoon, Hildegarde Kehren, Lillian Freese, Janis Grimes, Marilee Matthiessen, Jane Stuhler, with Rebecca Grimes Claire Shannon Jean Bender Lois Canetrell Ramona Hoffman and Loretta Gerdes among the others.
A third year Latin class was added to the high school curriculum at the request of two students. Lois Kehren and Abigail Banghart form the class, taught by Miss Betty Donovan. due to small enrollment, meetings run 4 to 4:30 PM after school as Cicero orations are translated.
