Prairie Hill Be Natural girls and parents toured Cedar Rapids plants including Quaker Qats Co Wilson Packing and Penick and Ford. Leaders Mrs John Wacker and Mrs F H Kromminga attended the October 7 meeting at the Lutheran church basement where 12 members reported Mother-Daughter banquet awards.
4 H Club members approve monthly meetings on the first Tuesday. November gathering planned at the Goedken home with Alice Laura and Dorothy. New enrollment cards issued. Members donate $2 for kitchen dishes. Halloween party planned with Prairie Pals and Prairie Panthers. Older girls designated as big sisters to younger members with specific pairings.
Betty Pillard led with a 98 percent scoring record in the club. Betty and Evonne Reth were elected captains for the calendar sheets contest. Four new members Janice Simmons Gloria Kromminga Judy Goedken and Peggy Thomsen joined. Officers welcomed members and a program included a cake demonstration and a canning talk followed by a bake sale and refreshments.
A large crowd attended the boys banquet as the 4 H year begins anew. Delbert Hodgden spoke to the Pioneers and Jerry Schneiter to the Washington Tigers. Judy Ingwersen led as toastmistress at the girls banquet.
Lux Leghorn Land farms of Hopkinton wins the New York state egg laying contest with a Lux pullet scoring 93 percent amid about 800 entries. It marks the first 1-2 finish by the same breeder with two Lux pullets leading cross breds and Leghorns overall.
Mrs. Marvin Holst, Mrs. Donald Jansen, Mrs. Fannie Hicks, Mrs. Marvin Hanwardsen and Mrs. Jennie Hutton of the Astraman club attend the Iowa Federated Women's clubs second district convention at Calamus. Mrs. Mina Sears visits from California. Faith Lutheran church hosts the event themed The United Nations for Peace and World Progress. The Astraman club program book earns an excellent rating as about 200 attend. Next year’s convention will be in Dubuque.
Mrs Henry Moenk welcomed members to a Wednesday afternoon Pinochle session followed by a one o clock dessert luncheon. Scoring honors went to Mrs Garrett Juilfs Mrs Walter Holtz and Mrs W A Hicks.
The parish choir will rehearse Sunday October 17 at 7 30 p m. The session aims to prepare for upcoming services with all singers invited to attend.
A junior high rally will be held at Mt. Vernon on Sunday afternoon October 16. Community groups invite students and families to participate in the event with activities and collective cheer.
Mrs Hazel Reade Mrs Mina Sears and Allen Chatterton of Ofslo were among 17 honored for 25 years of membership in the Order of Eastern Star. The candlelight ceremony occurred Monday evening in the Masonic Temple at Wyoming.
Mrs. George Tjaden hosted at her home with co-hostesses Mrs. Donald Jansen and Mrs. Elva Hall. Mr. Marvin Hanwardsen led the devotions as two exchanged students visiting in Jones county spoke to the group.
A square dance for school children took place in the Community room on October 6. Younger pupils were entertained until 9 p.m. and then the higher grades took over for the remainder of the evening.
Mrs. Anna Brodersen spent a weekend visiting the Lloyd Fadley home. Mrs. Jens Jensen and Mrs. Fred Martens visited Mrs. Mike Klink.
Sealed bids for 1.84 miles of road grading in Cass township sections 14 125 and 10, project No 271, Cass township, Jones County Iowa must be filed by 11 00 a m October 18 1955 with the County Auditor Anamosa Iowa. A $1000 certified check is required with each bid.
Elsie Holst of Chicago visited her mother and the Calvin Reiss home. Edwin Reid will take possession of the 147 acre farm recently purchased from A E Stampe March 1. Mrs Don Parmenter of Center Point visited Wednesday in the Howard Green and Leslie Meade homes. David Moenk spent last week with his grandparents Mr and Mrs Henry Moenk. His sister Pamela visited in the Gene Denniston home, their mother hospitalized for surgery.
Jeff Clark, journalism instructor at the State University of Iowa, will visit Monticello on Monday afternoon October 17 to meet high school journalism students and advise the school paper and annual staffs. He leads the SUL high school fieldwork and aims to boost student interest in journalism and stress staff participation.
