Iowa banks supervised by the state banking department report strong health deposits totaling 251.99 million as of Sept 12, up 7.18 million from the June call and 39.31 million from a year ago. Bills receivable, overdrafts, and reserves shifted with eight new banks since June 30 and forty nine since Sept 11. The average reserve stood at 18.4 percent.
Algona plans a large paving program with five miles of asphaltic concrete pavement. The commercial club pushed for more paving and petitions, and a council resolution for nearly seventy five blocks of paving passed unanimously. Work to be completed in spring and summer at an estimated cost near $100000.
The Second Infantry Iowa National Guard unit is expected to be the first Iowa unit to be demobilized after orders are issued. A letter from a Second Regiment officer, deemed authentic, says Brigadier General H A Allen urged General Tunston to relieve the Second Regiment first from border duty.

President Wilson will send weekly wireless messages from Davenport to every U S point during October. Miss Genevieve Bigley of Graettinger returns home from France where she served six months near the front line at a regional hospital. She graduates from Mercy Hospital Chicago and sailed in January to join the Chicago Unit under Dr. J. B. Murphy. She reached Etaples, eighty five miles north of Paris, before duty was constrained by censorship.
Miss Clara Barnes a domestic science teacher in Moulton schools died from injuries after an automobile accident in Bloomfield. August Post president of the National Bank of Moulton and owner of the wrecked car was injured and reported to be improved. The seven passengers included Barnes and Post, with Barnes trapped under the wreckage and severely burned as the car overturned and burned.
Webster City central schools were closed after the third infantile paralysis case in a week. Buildings will be fumigated. one case proved fatal while two are mild. A detention hospital has isolated one case at the county farm amid city unease.
William C Wilcox dean of liberal arts and head of history at State University of Iowa died at home after a cancerous tumor. He served twenty two years guiding education and reorganizing internal administration making the university more efficient and effective.
The U S department of agriculture announces Iowa winners in boys and girls clubs. Wade Hauser of Union led corn clubs with 150.10 bushels per acre at $26 cost and $106.21 profit. Earl Blair of Dayton topped pig clubs, gaining 470 pounds on two pigs in 120 days with $22.83 cost and $12.89 profit.
Waterloo has awarded a contract for an extensive gravel road project. Five miles of road will be built with twelve foot roadways and ten inches of gravel in the center on five principal roads radiating from the business district.
James Rhodes 20, a private in the Iowa National Guard second infantry, drowned in a canal near the Brownsville Texas concentration camp. Rhodes hailed from Brushy, near Fort Dodge.
Professor Pew head of animal husbandry selects five team members for the Iowa State judging squad to contest against other colleges at the Royal Stock Show in Kansas City. Members named are Chris Christenson W F P LaGrange L I Wheeler J L Evans and V B Peters with one alternate.
Cattle judging teams from Ames college won first honors at the American Royal Live Stock show in Kansas City and at the Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress. Competing against Missouri Kansas and Nebraska colleges, the Waterloo team included Leslie V. Wilson Grinnell J A Sturdevant Sioux City and Walter L. Henderson Randolph. Wilson of Ames won first place among all judges at Waterloo.
Executors and administrators of estates over 60000 gross or 50000 net must notify the collector of internal revenue within 30 days of appointment. Severe penalties apply for noncompliance. Executors should notify Louis D Murphy district collector at Dubuque.
Mrs Ida B Wise Smith of Cedar Rapids was unanimously re elected president of the Iowa WCTU at the annual Fort Dodge convention. Officers named include Mrs Ella Hill Des Moines vice president Mrs Etta Hurford Indianola honorary vice president Mrs L D Carhart Marion corresponding secretary Mrs Carrie Ballenger Council Bluffs secretary and Mrs Lucile Shadle Shenandoah treasurer.
Des Moines report notes Miss Mabel Elwood of Lime Springs, a former enrolling clerk in the house of the law legislature for four sessions, authorized to practice law in Iowa. She led her class of twenty two to pass the state bar examination as the sole woman.
Benjamin Cornell Reynold long time Des Moines resident dies at 97 at his home. He is survived by seven children including two twin sons aged over seventy and another son over seventy two.

Maj William Warner prominent Missouri statesman and former U S senator died at his Kansas City residence after a breakdown following the G A R encampment. He was seventy and received blood transfusions from his son John B Warner as his condition worsened. His son a daughter Mrs Cora Wilbur and widow Mrs Sophia Warner were at his deathbed.
A dispatch to Reuters states that a court martial in Constantinople condemned Essad Pasha, former provisional president of Albania, to death. The report was received in Amsterdam.
In the North Sea near Esbjerg Denmark on October 7 fishermen reported a partially submerged Zeppelin. German destroyers circled the airship attempting to keep it afloat as rescue efforts continued.

In Illinois near Princeville ten miles north of Peoria on Wednesday Trather Schuetz was killed and Bishop Dunne and Father Shannon seriously injured when a car coming toward Peoria forced their vehicle off the road causing it to overturn. The bishop was thrown from the car but escaped with minor scratches.
Mendon Michigan October 6 a blaze destroyed the towns business section and many fine homes causing an estimated loss of 300000 to 400000. The fire began at the Boyer meat market and was driven by a high wind along the main street. Rhinelander Wisconsin October 6 two hundred men fought to save Phelps from a second fire with a 300000 loss reported.
Three workmen were killed in a powerful explosion at the Inois Powder company plant in Grafton Illinois. The blast was so strong its shock was felt in Edwardsville.
Two men died and an engineman was seriously scalded when the Mercantile express on the Pennsylvania road collided with a stock train near Altoona Pennsylvania. about a dozen people were injured in the crash on October 7.

Scott Mansell alias James Allerton, a 64 year old former lumber worker from Mancelona, confessed to killing Mrs. Anna St. John in Elmira and Westboro and is believed to have murdered his son ten years earlier and his two sisters eight years earlier. He pleaded guilty and was swiftly sentenced after marriage on September 19 and the killing on September 22 with arrest October 2 and sentence October 4.
Brooklyn Robins clinched the NL pennant with a 9 to 6 win over the Giants on Tuesday and will meet the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. The final stretch saw Boston defeat Philadelphia twice, leaving Philadelphia and Boston to duel for second place as Moran's team contends for the title.

Five people died and about fifty were injured when the north span of West Third Street bridge gave way under two loaded street cars. The cars fell 25 feet onto Baltimore & Ohio rails. one inverted and crushed, the other wrecked by fallen girders. Collision on the span caused the collapse.
