Des Moines reports the 2 million dollar Capitol extension advancing rapidly. Old factories and blocks have given way to a sweeping park with a new circular road, concrete bridge, and graded grounds. Curbs and paving bids are issued, with contracts routed to state officials and a start by October 2 and completion by December 1.
Wanella County has seen major highway improvements and new road projects in recent months, per state highway commission reports prepared by township officials. District engineer Joe Morrison led a gathering of township clerks and road superintendents and expressed satisfaction with unofficial county updates this year.
Enlistment and training changes did not reduce Ames enrollment. About 1100 students will form the Iowa State College cadet corps with 700 freshmen and 400 sophomores under General Lincoln, reflecting a campus military program expansion.

A Milwaukee train struck the automobile carrying Tama Lewis Reiney aged 31 and his father-in-law Judge Berger at a grade crossing. The stalled car could not be moved in time and both men were killed.
Ames fire protection is boosted with a new $6,700 combination chemical and hose car replacing the horse drawn hose cart. The engine delivers 105 horsepower and carries 1 200 feet of water line and 2009 feet of chemical hose.
In Webster City Hamilton county cows died after drinking creek water mixed with poured cement. The board of supervisors had built a cement culvert near Kamyrar and moist cement entered the stream. Three cows from Harm H Tapper’s herd died and stomachs showed thick coating of cement with a cement ball found.
A warrant was issued against the Selis Floto circus manager for false advertising after Frank Gotch the world champion wrestler was advertised to appear in Portland Oregon. He has not joined the show since breaking his leg months ago and a constable served the warrant with 500 bonds required.
A circulated report from Iowa suggests the Board of Control favors buying more corn and less flour to cut costs for state institutions. Flour is $2 a barrel higher than last year, boosting corn meal use. Beans are scarce at $6 per bushel, and agents hesitate to stock up hoping for price relief.
Iowa farm land continues to fetch high prices despite cautious forecasts. A Perry sale of 190 acres brought 57 000 at 300 per acre with good improvements, while Bouton land sold weeks earlier at 270 per acre in a competitive public auction. A two year old child of Mr and Mrs Arthur Everett living on a local farm was found drowned in a water tank. The tank lay on a side hill giving easy access. A year ago the Stennett family lost a child in the same tank in this area.
Iowa producers led in sweet corn for canning this season with 50 000 acres planted. The Iowa Canners association held its annual convention in Ames with about 30 members in attendance.
A archaeologic survey by Frail Loren Stuckey of Iowa University in Johnson county near Lone Tree reports nearly four hundred prehistoric burial mounds discovered. The contents of the mounds will be investigated.
Dr. G H Sumner secretary of the state board of health reports infantile paralysis is on the decline in Iowa with few new cases expected. He says the disease is well in hand and reporting may end soon. Since June there have been 171 cases.
Government rescue stations mobilize crews from August to November to save fish from shallow sloughs and ponds. Six stations operate in North McGregor Bellevue Fairport Homer Minn LaCrosse Wis and Lake Point Minn. Collected fish are loaded into cars and sent to inland rivers and lakes.
In Des Moines the state board of health approved updated health regulations after a conference with Iowa League of Municipalities representatives. The changes remove internal code suggestions, standardize infection quarantine to forty two days, and consider printing blanks for reports with council funding.
The Iowa state railroad commission members toured Illinois to study automatic grade crossing gates. J A Peabody of Chicago & North Western joined the delegation. Nine firemen were seriously burned in a Waterloo blaze. Assistant Chief Martin Burke was fatally injured as a gasoline tank exploded in a clearing, covering rescuers with burning fuel and trapping several inside the building. Burke was carried out by his crew.

An armed hold up halted Michigan Central passenger train No. 14 two miles east of Dearborn. The mail car and engine were uncoupled and driven ten miles from the scene. The mail and express cars were looted.
