Elkader Chamber of Commerce pushes public visibility with weather bragging and small promotional contests. An Ear of Corn contest with $15 in prizes is proposed as a low cost, high impact idea to draw shoppers and residents to weekly town gatherings.
Mrs. John H. M. Thompson 86 longtime Jones County resident died October 3 at her Monticello home after a monthlong illness. Born Mary Catherine Guthrie in Winthrop Iowa on March 31 1862 she taught school in Buchanan County and married John H. M. Thompson in 1886. The Thompsons lived in Center Junction Monticello and Cedar Rapids before moving to Montana. Funeral services were held at Goettsch Funeral Home with Dr. William J. Grossheim officiating and burial at Scotch Grove Cemetery. Surviving are three children and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Local church schedules list Masses and services at Setved Heart, St. Matthew's, Presbyterian, Castle Grove, Congregational Christian, Wayne Zion, Methodist Oswald Sandbach, Evangelical and Reformed, and other congregations. Notable items include food sale October 16 at Loop's Furniture, various catechetical classes, youth programs, and a festival October 10 with Rev Otto Baumann as speaker.
Authorities question a suspect in Sioux Center about an automobile theft. At about 2 PM he reportedly escaped after breaking away, running through an alley and stealing a car. Police say they have a strong case that he took the second vehicle.
Thomas Eichhorn was chosen president of the Wyoming Community Club at its annual meeting. Other officers included Hubert Alden as secretary and Adra Lane as treasurer. Directors named were Ernest Reitz Gordon Marshall W. W. Bronson Robert Wensorra M. Botkin William Hurst Clarence Romer Ray Tompkins Earl Keegan Howard Jamison John Holmes and F. T. Petersen.
Mrs. Gus Kansas of Sterling DL and Mrs. John Hendricks of Rock Falls DL spent a few days last week at Mrs. Minnie Heeren home. William Bersley of Dubuque was a Sunday guest in the Barner Schaeffer home. Claude Batchelder and Center Junction neighbors dined with John Batchelder. Ralph Lahey visited Manchester at Cyril and Will Gavin's home. D R Krueger called on Earl Johnson at Oelwein. Fred Bohlken of Marion and Andrew Glass of Castle Grove joined John Batchelder Tuesday afternoon. The New York Sun began in 1883 as the first permanent penny paper.
Onslow The Clay township Farm Bureau held its regular meeting at Edwin Reid home with twelve families participating in a wiener roast. Officers elected were William Reade president Wilfred Wherry secretary and Mrs Claire Fayram Mrs Harm Harms and Mrs Alva Streeper as committeewomen The Boy Scouts of Jones county
The Future Farmers of America group progresses on a southeast school lot building with a completed steel frame and sheet aluminum. They plan to store four school buses and add a farm shop. Rodent contest leaders Jim Conley and Jim Heiken report Conley’s south team ahead with seventeen points. pool contest, Christmas card sales, seed germination tests, and next week’s Sophomores corn plot selection are also noted.
Monticello vocal music departments present a November 4 concert at Mount Vernon under John Duckwall of Cornell College. Miss White will lead mixed choir, girls trio, boys quartet and soloists. Students will be excused from school. buses will transport them. Admission is free.
G A A girls held a Thursday scavenger hunt in dark hours using flashlights to locate items from baby rattles to good luck charms. Each group completed lamp post tasks before returning to the school house then gathered for refreshments and planning future gatherings.
Monti introduces its first Spanish course directed by Miss Bush. Thirteen girls and six boys study alphabet sounds and classroom objects. They learn colors through classroom games and plan to sing American songs in Spanish as the program grows.
The kindergarten class collects caterpillars leaves and pods for a fall display. Barbara Null’s fifth birthday is celebrated after school with cake. Bruce Stumbaugh brings rabbits for the second grade. Students write about them and create number booklets from one to ten. Mrs. Warners class prints leaf patterns and studies leaves. Third graders practice letter writing. The fifth and sixth grades diagram steam power and friction. Joe Melsha and Margaret Edwards pick library books. The square dance is taught in music.
Homecoming has been postponed from October to Friday November fifth due to lack of preparation time. Alumni are urged to mark the date on their calendars and note the new schedule.
Dr. Frank Q. Brown spoke to the student body on September 20 in the high school auditorium about the mystery of the air we breathe. He demonstrated liquid air effects, including freezing flowers and shattering a frozen weiner on the table. A similar program on Sounds of the Air was shown October 4, outlining the mysteries of sound. More such programs will be presented throughout the year.
In a pep filled note the Monti Hi community pledges smooth operations this school year. They praise cooperation across athletic teams band cheerleaders and all groups and emphasize student responsibility and loyal support regardless of wins. The weekly lunch menu lists creamed potatoes deviled eggs vegetable soup meat balls and more with milk and dessert.
Monticello's marching band heads to Ottumwa on October 16 for the state marching band contest and Ottumwa Band Festival. They will also participate in an evening mass band and performances, with a queen to be elected. Lyle Behrends leads the hillbilly group with members including Minnie Otten, Paul Schneidler, Mary Wilcox, and others.
Seniors from the Commercial Law and Problems of Democracy classes visited the Jones County Courthouse in Anamosa on Monday October 4 to observe the opening of a new court case. Morning and afternoon sessions included jury impaneling opening statements witness testimony and cross examination witnessed by Mr Brown and Mrs Adams.
Students selected their class rings from several companies last week at Monti High. The standout feature is personalized initials on the ring. Some challenges and customer options were noted in the display event.
