The Saturday morning bulletin lists births: Sept 26 Harlan Bechen and wife Bernard a boy. Robert Paul and Onslow a girl. Marvin Klaren and Hopkinton a boy. Merle Breiholz and Monti cello a boy. Justice Court records show Sept 22 to Sept 28 speeding, reckless driving, improper passing, and other traffic offenses with fines and costs.
Postmaster Paul Bender announced Monticello will observe National Letter Writing Week from October 7 to 13. He stressed the importance of uncensored first class mail as a basic American freedom and urged residents to join the nationwide celebration to honor letter writing and keep families connected with news and affection.
Walter Hoppe 41, of Morley area and Leonard Kula 40, Cass township farmer, seek the 1958 term on the Jones county supervisors. Kula chairs Cass county Stabilization committee and is active in farm and church groups. Hoppe chairs Jones county National Farmers organization and has ties to Izaak Walton league and Farm Bureau.
Lorenz Ahrendsen, 66, of Oxford Junction, received severe bruises when a tractor toppled onto him while he worked in a timber area on his son Hans’s farm. The manure spreader was pulled by the tractor. neighbors freed him and he was taken to St Luke’s hospital Cedar Rapids with no broken bones reported.
William J. Bailey of Anamosa and Henry Adams of Monticello, longtime county supervisors, announce run for the 1958 term. Adams, a Lions leader and county officers official, is a father of four. Bailey, lifelong Jones County resident, two farm families, three children, and active in Good Roads efforts.
Monticello Rotarians heard Judy Podhaski daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Podhaski describe her summer trip to Europe with the State University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders. Vice President Andy Strittmatter led in the president's absence.
Miller was elected as the county director and representative to the Iowa Retail Farm Equipment Association by members meeting Thursday evening at Poplar Heights in Jones County. Roy Miller was chosen to lead the local dealers group.
Dr. Donald Kyer a Dubuque psychiatrist spoke at Monticello Business and Professional Women dinner on mental mechanisms. He listed daily defense tools such as daydreaming compensation rationalization projection and sublimation as normal protective psychology.
Monticello City council awarded a curb and gutter contract to Willman Construction of Cedar Rapids for 1.9714 per foot, covering about 4393 feet to be completed by Nov 3 after a performance bond. Clark Construction bid 2.10 per foot.
Monticello hosts Corn Pickers Week from October 2 through 6 with daily glove giveaways and a grand prize farm wagon drawn Saturday at 9 30 p.m. Elton Copley leads the Greater Monticello committee event. Free work gloves are distributed daily 2 to 4 p.m. to visiting farm families.
Jim O'Shea of Kansas City Missouri a district agent for State Farmers Insurance is awarded a flight trip for himself and his wife to New Orleans through the company He is the son of Mr and Mrs James P O'Shea The notice lists participating stores offering farm family gloves and seasonal bargains during Corn Pickers Week with many local merchants named.
Pat Stambaugh led about 170 Amber residents to honor 74 year old blacksmith George Kinnan for 22 years of service at a banquet at the Monticello Gun club. Kinnan received a table model television and was joined by Oakdale relatives. He recalls using fire for special work and electric welding for 18 years, working long hours with little vacation.
Out of town visitors from Cedar Rapids include Mrs. George A. Rickels Mrs. Ben Eiben Mrs. Albert Hartman and Mrs. Arnold Jacobs who stopped by on Wednesday.
More than 500 4 H club members mothers and friends expected for the annual Mother Daughter Award banquet at Wyoming High School Saturday Oct 6 at 6 30 p m Carla Folkers Scotch Grove county 4 H president will chair Invocations greetings and roll call will be delivered by local 4 H leaders Awards will be presented for gardening poultry foods and more Decorations are organized by Oxford Happy Hustlers Oxford Livewire Lassies with nut cups by Olin Ship Ahoy club Corsages prepared by Madison Jolly Janes and Clay Busy Bees Cleanup led by Wyoming Polly Pig tails and Wyoming Junior Homemakers Planning committee led by Mrs Louis Schladetzky.
The Monticello public school junior class launches its annual magazine drive from Sept 20 to Oct 2. Teams, girls led by Captain Mary Jean Pluger and boys led by Captain Dean Helgens, aim to beat last year’s $3,959.24 and reach $4,000. Sponsors include Principal Vance Stead Miss June Bridges Mrs Earl Griffith and Charles Kissick.
Martelle 4-H members submitted their annual record books on September 5 at the Martelle consolidated school and received 4-H shirts. They thanked retiring club leaders Willis Fairbanks and Dale Newman. A nominating committee for officers and leaders was named: Ray Beighle, Doug Peet, Vernon Tjaden, Paul Port, and Jim Schmidt.
