Shed Fire Destroys Hay Bales on Muller Farm West of Monticello
A large steel span shed on Carl Muller farm six and a half miles west of Monticello burned Sunday afternoon, destroying nine hundred bales of straw. Monticello Fire Department fought the blaze from 3:25 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. No machinery buildings were damaged. The cause remains unknown. the farm in Castle Grove township is owned by William Wolken.

Theft attempt foiled at Shelley's Market by alert clerk
Police chief reports two Black men entered Monticello store Monday morning. One purchased an apple while the other grabbed cash from the register. A second clerk confronted them and they fled. Two others were seen entering a car and leaving town.

Break-ins hit Vanourny's and Monty Bowl
A thief broke into Vanourny's Inc and Monty Bowl last Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, stealing $2 to $3 in cash from Vanourny's and about $2 in nickels and change from a pinball machine at Monty Bowl. The intruder pried the safe dial, knocked in a back door, and attempted to access the Vanourny's safe before possibly retreating after finding tear gas.
