County handles long range bridge upgrades in Jones County
Over 300 Jones County bridges remain embargoed and unsafe due to narrowness and alignment. This summer two large bridges in Castle Grove and Clay townships were replaced with wider structures funded partly by federal safety money. The Clay bridge on Mineral Creek, 124 by 24 feet, replaces a 40 by 15 foot bottleneck, ending flooding issues. The Delay road span in Castle Grove, costing 39000, followed federal funding patterns for major repair. Officials anticipate continuing the program next year to bring bridges up to grade.

Monticello Chamber Begins Christmas Ticket Drawings
Monticello Area Chamber of Commerce members start distributing tickets for five Christmas drawings. The grand prize is a 1976 Chevrolet Chevette Hatchback to be awarded at the final drawing on Thursday, December 23. The first drawing on November 27 offers $1,000 in merchandise and certificates. subsequent drawings on December 4, 11, and 23 award $250 to $300 in trade certificates.

Lucille I. Woeste of Route 2 Monticello is appointed Jones county public health nurse succeeding retiree Marion H. Serbousek. Woeste, a 1947 Allen Memorial graduate and Iowa registered nurse, has 21 years of hospital nursing in Delaware county and John McDonald hospital, under the Iowa Merit System. She resides near Monticello with husband Arvin, has a daughter Karla, and joins county board members Dr Otto Senft Dale Wenndt and Cris H Randolph. Wanda McGreevy serves as secretary in Anamosa courthouse nurse’s office.

Kness gets ten year term for breaking and entering
Donald Lee Kness of Marion was sentenced in Jones County District Court to ten years in the state penitentiary at Fort Madison for breaking and entering the Towne's Amber Inn on April 5 1975. The term runs concurrently with a 25 year sentence he is serving for a Linn County murder charge. Other trials set include Thomas McArdle Dubuque for larceny of a motor vehicle in the Oct 28 theft of a 1974 Chevrolet pickup from Carl Wolken Monticello and Timothy J Charles Dubuque bound over for district court. Trials for Amco Oil Co v Bleadorn and Hughes v Smith are scheduled nearby.

Retiring Public Health Nurse Receives Flu Shot
Marion Serbousek of Iowa retires December 1 after 27 years in public health. At a swine flu clinic in Anamosa she received a shot alongside Roger Sandberg of the Iowa department of health, while Lucille Woeste assists. Clinics continue Thursday at Wyoming school gym and Oxford Jet elementary, with Friday at Olin school gym. Shots were given Wednesday in Monticello.
