Visitors signed the guest register Sunday afternoon before tours at the Jones County Historical Museum open house. The museum will welcome groups Sundays this summer starting June 6 with tours by special arrangement.
More than 300 people attended the museum open house at the Pioneer Village complex east of Amber. Displays included a chandelier from First Presbyterian Church in Monticello. Visitors noted a picnic area and plans for future buildings such as a blacksmith shop.
Birth announcements list Angela Marie Peterson born May in Rochester to Wes and Mrs Peterson with maternal grandmother Mrs Beckman. May 13 Dr Jacobson welcomes a daughter in Monticello. May 14 Ian Michael King born in Downey California to Keith and Mrs King with paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Delmar King. May 17 Roger Tucker’s family welcomes a son in Cascade. Marriage licenses for Dirks Binley Combs Higbee. multiple Monticello Anamosa Cedar Falls Lisbon couples. New vehicles include trucks motorcycles and a Mercury Oldsmobile Dodge and Chrysler models listed for various towns. Building permits issued for Dried Whey Inc addition and several residences and renovations with values noted.
Meals on Wheels board met on May 18 and heard April deliveries total 532. Ruth Wahl reported 23 people served in May with an average daily delivery of 18. June volunteers organized by Jane Gast will include mothers and daughters during school vacation. Lost magnetic signs should be returned to Mrs. Lillian Strittmatter.
The Oxford Jet high school held commencement on Tuesday May 18 with seniors receiving diplomas. Jones County amends its 1976-77 budget reducing the tax askings by 118,591 after the State Comptroller required a 98,910 cut to meet a 9 percent cap. A 2 p.m. May 25 hearing is set to review the revised plan with details in pages A-12-13.
Manatt-Carter Paving Co. files suit in Jones county district court seeking 15000 dollars for damage to a new street. Dorrance Bernard Mahoney and Timothy J. Mahoney named as defendants after a vehicle drove through fresh concrete on Pine Street Sept 25 1975. Damages include 10000 for property and 5000 exemplary. A separate criminal charge against George Richard Tuttle for suspended license. Jury verdicts and dissolution of marriage noted among other local legal actions and a Bicentennial Commission meeting set for 7:30 PM tonight to plan July 3 4 5 events.
