The House debated Eisenhower's soil bank plan with a prepayment feature and Democrat Wayne Hays offering an amendment requiring annual payments to be reported like political contributions. Republicans blocked the measure, while the Monticello Express notes the event as a matter of seriousness for farmers.
The W.C.S.G. met May 10 in the church parlors with 19 members. Bonnie Lyons spoke on segregation in schools and churches. devotion on Extensions was led by Lorraine McCullough. Hostesses were Fredda Ketelsen and Marilyn Ketelsen.
Mr and Mrs Alfred Pegorick hosted a Sunday May 6 birthday dinner for their seven year old daughter Rita. Dwaine Plueger, a General Electric employee in Milwaukee, visited his parents Mr. and Mrs. George Plueger in Monticello for the weekend, returning to work after the stay.
Attorney General Dayton Countryman will deliver the commencement address for Central City graduates on May 24, 1956, at 8 p.m. The event marks the end of the school year for Central City community schools.
Forrest Hagen delivers the junior high commencement address on May 22 at 8 p.m. The eighth grade plans its annual variety show on May 17 at 8 p.m. Hagen is a former school superintendent and longtime member of the Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union board of control and has been honored by the Boy Scouts of America.
The junior senior banquet takes place at 6 30 p m at Federated church with a dinner and toast program followed by a dance at Elm Crest country club Cedar Rapids. Music by the Soft Tones. The annual school picnic is set for Wednesday May 23 on the school grounds with dinner in the hot lunch room. Sponsored by the PTA and the student council.
