Feed Prices From 1894 Show Tiny Purchases and Low Costs
Milwaukee dairy consultant Carl E. Lee found an old Monticello barn ledger showing farmers bought small lots of feed at low prices. A 2 765 pound purchase on April 5 1894 cost only 25.90 dollars, while corn sold for 35 cents a bushel and bran for six cents per pound. Lee later married Gertrude Lang, a Brown Swiss breeder and dairy consultant.
