Monticello earns praise for 30 years of strong fire prevention and readiness. A new fire engine with modern gear will arrive this summer, enabling better response with water fog suppression and improved ladders and oxygen masks. The volunteer department currently reaches fires quickly while awaiting the upgrade.
Scotch Grove hosted May 15 at the Young home with Mrs. R P Young Mrs L A Oltman and Mrs H J Dirks as hostesses. Activities included music business travelogue food talk and a recreational period led by L J Schlemme. Other notes cover St John’s Lutheran aid social events a Presbyterian Fellowship program and community visits by locals with family news and Farm Bureau events.
Castle Grove report notes Farmers Mutual Insurance Association authorized a $1600 settlement for Lawrence Stalken whose dwelling burned the prior night. The item sits amid a roundup of regional farm news including attendance at contests, farm bureau events, and local visits. Weather delays keep some farmers cautious about corn planting as Castle Grove Farm Bureau prepares a meeting at Clarence Eberhart home Thursday.
Mrs Greenley vents concerns at the end of each practice as the play nears its opening in a week. Gene fears shaving two weeks growth, Helen Jean worries about aging sixty years fast, and Irma Schoon struggles with a Charm Curl.
Four juniors Susan Stuhler Donna McCurdy Margaret Ann Zimmerman and Ray Rieniers were initiated into the Delta Sigma Delta chapter of National Honor Society at the annual banquet held in the Monty tearoom last Friday. Superintendent Shannon spoke on Preparing for a Better World. Banquet preparations were led by Irma Schoon Louise York Margaret Condit Delphia Balster Colleen Maire Helen Mardorf and Max Schrader. Faculty sponsors are Miss Amney Wood and Mrs. Caryl Ross. Max Schrader and Irma Schoon serve as officers.
Juniors and seniors mark Towa's 100th anniversary with a Centennial banquet. The main program features a skit, The Photo Album, depicting a century of life. Cast includes Betty Hoult Susan Stuhler Marjorie Thomas Margaret Ann Zimm erman Leona Smith and others with music by Miss Hansen Donna McCurdy Kay Bender Barbara Walker.
The VFW Auxiliary sponsored an essay competition for Sacred Heart High and Monticello High students on the topic What Can I Do For My Country. Anastasia McLees of Sacred Heart High won first place with Delphia Balster and Dorothy Hinrichs of Monticello High taking second and third.
Last Friday Monti High held a school circus with seniors performing acts led by Max Schrader. Highlights included Joey Appleby’s tight rope routine, Professor Lang with trained penguins Betty Eggers and Vivian Englehart, Elaine Behrends as the FAT lady, and Delphia Balster with Helen Gerdes on horse. Prizes for best dressed were awarded by Mr. Eells, with judges Mrs. Greenley Miss Wagner and Miss Hetfield. A nine piece band closed the day with Monti High selections.
Monti track squad faced Dubuque May 1 at Dubuque with Ray Rieniers winning the mile, Newton sweeping the 100 and 220 dashes and placing second in the broad jump, and Hintz taking the 440 dash and high hurdles. Ron Paulsen was runner up in the discus and high jump, Gene Kuehl third in the football throw, while at Mount Vernon Rieniers took second in the mile and Hintz second in the 440. Don Newton was third in the 220 and fourth in the 100. Paulsen was fourth in discus and tied for fourth in high jump. Monti finished with 10 percent of points, ranking third among six schools behind Mount Vernon, University High, West Liberty, Tipton, Monti cello, and West Branch.
The speech class staged three one act plays last Tuesday entertaining the whole high school. Pinks and Patches as a drama explored Texie’s rise above family limits with a large cast handling props and prompting. The Third Plate a comedy depicted a young couple paralyzed by meddling parents with a sizable cast and stage crew. Oh Say Can You Sing a comedy set in a Blodgett living room featured multiple Blodgett family roles, props crew and promotion team.
Donna McCurdy and Bob Mes serli are selected to serve as ushers at all senior events. Edna Kray and Don Bohlken chosen as alternates for the same duties.
