The Olin Band played the Star Spangled Banner to start the flag ceremony. A sudden shower sent attendees to the fire station where the event continued. Open house accompanied the ceremony at the station.
Monticello park board discussed the summer recreation program set for June 21 to July 31 and the city swimming pool at the May meeting. The Old Capitol restoration fund drive. T-shirt sales by sixth graders. and pool rules, ticket sales through the school, and adult swim times were also noted.
Monticello merchant Steve McAleer purchases Culligan Soft Water Service from Larry Robertson. McAleer, a six year Georgia-Pacific veteran, plans full time operation sharing space with Jones County Oil in Anamosa run by his brother Dan. Robertson owned the business 25 years and previously ran Poplar Heights supper club.
The third and final home school committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday May 11 at 8 p.m. in Central school library. Jim Cooney of Hillcrest Services will discuss the Jones county Counseling Service and propose parent education classes for Monticello parents. Open to all interested persons. An informal discussion on school problems follows.
About 100 people gathered at the Olin fire station Sunday May 2 for a Bicentennial flag ceremony led by American Legion Post 412. Mayor Dave Cavey received the flag from Jones county Bicentennial chair Dale Hackett as notes from Governor Ray were read.
Anamosa man William B. Seeley had the delivery of marijuana charge discharged for lack of probable cause. A separate charge of distributing to under 18 was dismissed on defendant’s motion. Virgil Louis Dirks’s OMVAI second offense was transferred to district court from magistrate court.
