An Express photographer captured blockades on Highway 151 as three bridges remain out between Monticello and Anamosa. Work continues between the towns and on several other structures, rapidly progressing along the highway.
Jones county clerk lists marriage licenses for Richard B. Rickels and Regena A. Ricklefs of Monticello. Also records new car and truck registrations including Ford and Chevrolet models with owners in Monticello Center Junction and Wyoming. Police court docket shows Walter W. Tink fined $10 and costs for speeding. Wilfred Schuster fined $3 and costs for defective equipment.
Mrs. Friederike Hermine Dirks widow of Gerd Dirks died April 27 after a long illness at John McDonald hospital. Born 1880 in Hanover she came to the United States at age two. She and Gerd Dirks lived in Wayne township Langworthy and Monticello before her death. Survivors include sons George Hi Dirks Amber John F Dirks August Dirks and Rein hard Dirks daughters Minnie Clara Anna and others. 43 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 30 at Wayne Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church with burial at Wayne cemetery.
Bob Crosby will headline the Great Jones County Fair with the June Taylor dancers and Carol Richards on Saturday night. Claude Appleby, fair secretary, says the talent lineup is the strongest yet with more acts and crossovers from the New York state fair. Tuesday features saddle club events and additional acts are planned for this year.
Bob Feller, guest speaker for the Monticello area athletic banquet, arrived at 9 10 p.m. after a late start and a detour on rural roads. The event honored local high school athletes with a fish dinner, performances, and remarks by coaches and officials.
Monticello Community School will graduate May 27 as scheduled despite being four days short of the 180 required days. Superintendent Boyd Shannon notes the board decided to end school May 27, with an extra week possible next year if weather continues to disrupt.
In Jones county district court on Friday two men pled guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated first offense. James Loras Burds of Worthington was fined 300 dollars plus costs and lost licenses for 60 days. John Anthony Coohey of Monticello was fined 300 dollars plus costs. Other cases included suspensions, additional fines, and several divorces with custody and support actions.
