A Monticello survey of nine industries shows 194 of 306 workers lived in town while 112 were non local. Among 232 men employed, 131 were local and 101 non local. 63 of 74 women were local and 11 lived outside the town.
John McDonald hospital records list three births on consecutive days. A Monticello couple welcomes a boy on February 26, a Cascade couple a girl on February 28, and a Monticello couple another girl on February 29. Additional birth in Dubuque Xavier hospital on February 29 to Vernon Demmer and wife with noted paternal and maternal grandparents.
Since Feb 17, Robert Sievert 24 of Dennison and Hazel Crouch 24 of Dunlap along with Dick J. Rundle 22 of Monti Cello and Judy A. Aldrich 17 of Mt. Vernon are listed in an incident report.

Three Monticello high school seniors were nominated for the Town State Farmer degree by Forrest Johnston vocational agriculture teacher. Nominees are Yerry Schneiter Bob Ganfield and Bill Hacke. Balloting occurs at the state convention in Waterloo April 19 20 and 21. The degree is the highest honor from the State FFA. Monticello FFA chapter has 64 members. Each nominee must complete a 14 page application.
Helen M. Tucker of Jones County Extension announces the Spice of Life program on KWWL TV Waterloo at 1 30 p m Thursday March 1. Viewers can shop for curtains and draperies from home.
A Holstein cow owned by Cecil Curtis of Monticello produced its 11th calf last week, eight years after its first birth. Six of the calves arrived as twins, and Curtis notes the cow has been artificially bred on his farm a half mile north of Monticello on highway 38.
Jones County extension youth director Jerry Parsons reports seventeen junior cattle feeder projects weighed in with two to three more expected by March 1. The program includes three FFA projects and the rest 4-H members, with two girls among the participants.
Precinct caucuses to name 191 delegates to the Jones county Republican presidential convention end Friday as set by the county GOP central committee. The county convention occurs March 16 at Anamosa courthouse. 26 delegates advance to the April 6 Des Moines state convention.
The Daisy and Firefly groups of the Blue Birds met at the Community building Wednesday afternoon for a Dress Up party. Mrs Vance Stead led the Daisy group with Mrs Charles Clark as assistant. Mrs Paul Bender led the Firefly group with Mrs Anna Edwards as assistant. Nut cups and refreshments were prepared and served by the Blue Birds.
A pig from a litter of 13 born at the Leytem farm in Worthington has two bodies eight legs and two tails. The carcass shows one head and four ears, presented this week by farmer Chuck Leytem.
A Cedar Rapids man, Charles Walsh, was hospitalized with a compound leg fracture after a panel truck and a tractor pulled by a farm wagon collided on highway 261 a mile north of Martelle. The panel truck driver, Eugene Pan Toton, 18, was fined 25 dollars for losing control. Don K. Clark, 29, Martelle, rode the tractor. neither he nor Toton were hurt.
Patricia McNally visits her parents Mr. and Mrs. Francis J. McNally of Cascade. She has worked eight years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington and has been transferred to Havana Cuba for a two year assignment.
Approximately $350 was collected in the first two days of the annual Red Cross drive, started Monday. The North Jones county drive aims for $2,500 and intends to conclude by March 12. Shannon leads rural areas. Mrs. Ray Stumbaugh chairs Monticello city fund drive.
John Sill a 33 year old Hopkinton farmer was named Outstanding Young Farmer in Town at the Iowa Junior Chamber of Commerce awards banquet in Delwein He will receive a plaque and an expense paid trip to the National Jaycee meeting in Pittsburgh April 11 12 The four national finalists will be chosen at the national meeting and Sill is active in Farm Bureau Delaware county civic groups and extension council He has led in Buck Creek school and served on the Buck Creek school board
Lovell No 2 independent school district will auction a 95 year old stone schoolhouse two miles north of Monticello and east of Highway 38 on March 10 at 1 p.m. The sale includes the building a garage books and other educational aids. Monticello public school has already purchased desks and furniture.
A Jones county forage clinic featured six farmers Leo Bertling Monticello Cliff Wears Cascade Calvin Glenn Glen Brown Delbert Grafft Olin and Robert Livingstone Anamosa with town state college specialists R M McWilliams and Harry Thompson. The session covered oats silage bunker silos and quality forages plus a judging show of mixed hay legume hay oat grass and corn silage samples.
Deadline for filing nomination petitions for the March 12 school board election is noon Friday. Nominees up to Wednesday include Floyd Kephart, Mrs. Arthur Shelley, Dave Duckler, and Dr. A. K. Jones. Incumbents G. M. Casey Jones and R. A. Dick Long will not seek re election.
A 54 year old Anamosa man Gerd Weers is ordered to enter a plea by 10 am March 3 on a driving while intoxicated charge. He was arrested Friday night after his car ran onto a curb and stalled in Anamosa. The case was reported by Deputy Sheriff Lawrence LaBarge and Anamosa Marshal William T. Allen.
A special meeting of Monticello Development Corporation stockholders will be held Friday at 7 30 p.m. in the Community Building. Secretary Sam Schuetz announces the gathering to discuss stock issuance and other business.
In Buck Creek the moving month brings a chain of farm moves. The Junior DeShaws relocate to Harvey Bacon’s farm while Francis DeShaw takes over the DeShaw land from the Ehlers. The Harveys move to Mrs. C C Bacon’s Hopkinton home and Mrs. Bacon returns to her former farm, vacated by the Vic Wilsons who shift to Eldon Schultz’s former property.
Anthony J. Pelatari of Milwaukee drove a 1956 sedan off a muddy shoulder on highway 15 three miles south of here. The car crashed into a highway marker post and fence post before stopping. Pelatari was not hurt and drove the damaged car out of the ditch. The incident occurred about 3:30 p.m. Sunday according to Sheriff Lewis Dreibelbis.
Mrs Ray Adams entertained the '94 club at her home on Friday February 24 Coffee was served. Mrs Howard McLaughlin of Cedar Rapids reviewed the book Papa Married a Mormon by John Fitz gerald during the gathering.
The 1954 census lists 103 Jones County service establishments with receipts around 803000 and payrolls of 94000. Personal services accounted for 352000 in 44 firms while automotive services totaled 165000 across 18 firms and all other services 286000 from 41 firms. Monticello led with 31 establishments, Anamosa 26, rest 46. Monticello receipts 262000 Anamosa 197000 and others 344000.
Mrs George Harris hosted the Saturday Afternoon Sewing Club with ten members in attendance. The group enjoyed a social afternoon of sewing and visiting, and refreshments were served.
Three Jones county men, Jansen of Amber, Hansen of Oxford Junction, and Kula of Anamosa, have taken nominating papers to seek Democratic supervisor seats starting 1957 and 1958. Specht, incumbent auditor, reports the filings as the first Democratic challenge aside from the current auditor. Ongoing Republican incumbents Crain of Olin and Dirks of Center Junction are named for 1957, with Adams of Monticello and Bailey of Anamosa possible 1958 opponents.
Iowa State football coach Vince De Francesca will speak at the annual athletic banquet sponsored by the Greater Monticello committee. The event Monday March 26 at the Community building begins at 6 30 pm. Letterwinners from Sacred Heart and Monticello high schools will attend with coaches and wives. Tickets are $2.
Carroll Vaughn announces on pages four and five that Gold Bond stamps are back with purchases. The store distributes premium catalogs and stamp books as customers receive stamps. A store-wide sale accompanies the stamp return and is designed to save customers money.
In Jones County over 100 women joined a self-imposed diet program last month. Eight of ten groups met regularly with rising or steady enrollments and weekly weigh-ins showing 10 to 13 pounds typical losses. Total weight loss across six groups reached 475 pounds.
