The Monticello Salvation Army unit, led by Chauncey E. Robinson and Nella Hoffman, announces an annual drive to support local welfare needs and state regional programs. Robinson emphasizes ready service to all, with funds aiding local emergencies and Booth Memorial hospital, disaster relief, veterans, and other work. committee members include Dr. Mark F. Hogan and several others.
A friend reports chatter about a scheme to scent car exhaust with sausage or bacon aromas to boost pork sales. The writer notes odd ideas, observes local wildlife along the river, and imagines comical schemes to win boating prizes, ending with a humorous lament about lacking a big water tank.
The Center Junction Women’s club met February 22 at Mrs. Les Balster’s home with co-hostess Mrs. Ray Naylor. Talks on Women In Religion were given by Mrs. John Moehl and Mrs. Boyd Christensen. Members took self photos and guessed identities. Harp performances by Gladys McNeilly and others were noted, including Otto Baganz’s concert at St Matthew church Monticello. The harp was once shown at Chicago World’s Fair and bought for $10,000. Center Junction boys’ teams won both games against Onslow 37-20 and 31-28 on February 14, and beat Olin 44-22 with B team 16-12 on February 16.
Marion visitors Mr and Mrs John Ketelsen and son Lynn spent Wednesday in Don Ketelsen's home. Bud Pfend and family moved from Burmeister farm to a farm near Wyoming. Absent kindergarteners with chicken pox include Debbie Hormann Reva Pegerick Steven Guthrie and Steven Glenn. Donald Ketelsen and Hans Hinrichsen attended the soil bank meeting February 21 at the Farm Bureau building in Anamosa.
American citizens with claims against Russia for losses before November 16, 1933 must file notices of claim with the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission in Washington, D.C., by March 31, 1956 to pursue recovery.
Miss Shirley Smith daughter of Mr. and Mrs Charley Smith Onslow and Harbison Orr son of Mrs Averill Orr also of Onslow were married on Thursday February 16 at Maquoketa. Orr is a Clinton Machine Company employee and a Onslow High School graduate. Mrs Orr is senior at Onslow High School.
The Onslow and Wyoming Presbyterian and Methodist women united for World Day of Prayer observance held Friday February 14 with Mrs Walter Wagner of Onslow among participants.
General chairman led a program titled One Flock One Shepherd with leaders from Wyoming Presbyterian and Wyoming Methodist churches. Mrs. Lester French Mrs. Tom Eichhorn Mrs. Paul Tasker and Mrs. Louis Dusanek Mrs. Fred Bramer and Mrs. D J Wasson Onslow spoke. Rev Kenneth Hardin of Wyoming sang If With All Your Heart and Shepherd of Israel was sung by Mrs. Clarence Doll and Mrs. Irene Edwards. Mrs C R Smith and Mrs Walter Wagner were the pianists.
Personal items note Ben Paulsen attends a cattle sale in LaPorte City on Monday. Mr and Mrs George Paulsen and Mr and Mrs John Paulsen are listed as Wednesday evening dinner guests at the Warren Sonneman home in Muscatine.
Mr and Mrs Robert Scarr of Hampton were weekend guests in the Virgil Murphy home. Mr and Mrs Jerry Hoenshhel were Feb 15 dinner guests in the John Behn home at Monticello. Mr and Mrs Earl Mayberry visited the Delbert Mayberry family Tuesday evening. Mr and Mrs Harold Jordan entertained several couples at a Tuesday dinner in Wyoming. Mr and Mrs Harold Overholt named their infant son John Richard. Mr and Mrs Harbison Orr are hosting a wedding dance Saturday March 15 at Baldwin.
