View of Monticello's early days through reminiscences
Former resident Charles L. Monroe recalls Monticello in the horse and buggy era. He describes the old white schoolhouse and the new brick building opened around 1876, the opera house, minstrel shows, and a vibrant town life. He recalls North Main Street, Kitty Creek, Maquoketa River, the mill pond ice, fishing and swimming norms, and summer picnics with Indians trading and playing. He notes family ties, local figures, and predecessors now gone, ending with his wish to share this town history.
