The National Republican ticket lists McKinley and Hobart as presidential and vice presidential nominees. The Democratic convention in Chicago debates free silver versus gold standards, seating contesting delegates and signaling potential bolt risks. Also reported are local party events, endorsements, funeral notices, and favorable press notices for the late C. H. Monger.
The Marion Register endorses Major E. H. Conger of Des Moines and Hon. BE. B. James of Clinton for electors at large. The Clinton Herald backs James for his speaking power and principled stance and believes he could help create a large McKinley victory margin in Iowa.
Hon late Young of the Iowa Capital pays tribute to Charles H. Monger, editor of the Anamosa Journal, noting his gift with words and wide information. Art Coyle, one of the West’s pluckiest riders, set a new state record at the Cedar Rapids bicycle meet on the Fourth. He finished first in the ten mile race with pacemakers, lowering the state mark from 25 55 to 25 09 and reportedly beating the world amateur record. Coyle led from the start, lapped rivals, and won by more than two laps with crowd acclaim. The Monticello bank shows 16 silver dollars in a window display with a gold dollar at center.
