Local men formerly tied to drinking form an Alcoholics Anonymous chapter in Monticello. Some fear it harms the town’s reputation, but supporters say AA offers self help and could aid many, citing rising alcoholism rates and potential benefits like better health and home life.
At the Scotch Grove 4 H club regular meeting eleven members attended at Jeanette Wilcox’s home to answer roll calls on kitchen safety. Jean Bohlken demonstrated custards, Jeanette Wilcox with Luella Ricklefs showed angel food cake, Elaine Rickless spoke on why plan meals, and Mrs. Arthur Wilcox attended as a guest. Mrs. Harry Paulsen and Mrs. Arthur Wilcox were named garden leaders and will attend a meeting in Anamosa to introduce the new study topic. An additional note mentions June Henrichs wintering in Arizona with relatives and local visitors in the area including Rex Brady family and Henry Oltman group.
After Sunday service on January 30 Rev John F Baumann installed the newly elected Monticello Evangelical and Reformed church consistory. Elected officers include Elder Frank Schneiter, Trustee George L Buol, Deacons George Jaggs and Clarence Ricklefs, Treasurer George Mardorf, and Secretary George Burrichter who was re-elected.

Zwingle hosts Mrs. Zina Ralston and relatives including Raymond Ralston and Mildred Howell for visits. Maquoketa and Center Junction residents attend dinners, while Tom Bearinger plans a farm sale on the 18th. John Langrehr travels to Des Moines for a medical exam and to California to join the air corps.
Marvin Ricklefs was the honored guest at his father Clar’s home for a birthday observance. The event highlighted family ties and local recognition of Ricklefs in the community.
On January 20 Ricklefs hosted a birthday gathering. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Herman Ricklefs Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ricklefs Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Poppe Mr. and Mrs. Louie Zimm erman Mr. and Mrs. Dick Sherman Mrs. Mabel Kula and Delores Curt Sutton Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Foppe and Beverly Rickless. The evening featured card games followed by refreshments.
Representing Jones county at the Chicago stock yard hog market were Fred Lange of near Scotch Grove and Allan Hronik of near Oxford Junction. Lange sold 16 heavy black sows averaging 468 pounds at 14.90 per hundred pounds. Hronik sold 60 butcher hogs averaging 301 pounds at 16.50 per hundred pounds.
The Madison Farm Bureau and Homemakers Club met January 14 at the Farm Bureau building in Anamosa for a potluck supper with 65 attendees. Mrs. Marvin Lacock led singing, and Helen Tucker and Joe Legg presented a program on Growing a Personality. Carl Wurst of Wyoming shared slides from a Germany trip. hostesses were Mrs. Marvin Lacock, Mrs. Hans Hinrysen, and Mrs. Fredda Ketelsen.
