First 1971 Jones County Fatal Traffic Death Near Oxford Mills
Marilyn E. Paulson 20 of Eldridge died when her 1962 Chevrolet left a curve on county road E-53 near Oxford Jct. and struck a bridge abutment. The accident occurred about 3 30 a m Sunday Jan 10. The Iowa Highway Patrol and Jones county sheriff investigated.

Monticello Board Approves Expanded Work Release Program
The Monticello school board in regular session approved a expanded work release plan for grades 9 through 11 and accepted one teacher resignation. The plan allows students to schedule nonclass time for work experience with self-managed employment and employer records, with immediate return to full-time school if employment ends.

Ten Monticello seniors named Iowa State Scholars
Two thousand one hundred ninety six students were named state scholars last week. Monticello Community high school seniors Claudia Aschbrenner Paula Behrends William Dirks Patricia Hein Kent Knopp Barbara Patten Jana Rhatigan Victoria Steiner Terrence Webber and John Rees earned the honor. The Higher Education Facilities Commission announced the list and seeks college scholarships for most honorees. Eligible students may receive up to 800 dollars for tuition at an approved Iowa school. Scholarships depend on high scores and family income limits. those not meeting funds criteria are honorary State Scholars. All State Scholars receive a Certificate of Merit.

Five Monticello seniors named WaMa Band Festival first chair
Five Monticello seniors Will Dirks Mark McNeill Georgeanne Cassidy Jana Rhatigan and Brenda Jacobs were chosen for first chair in the WaMa Band Festival set for Saturday January 16 in Monticello. The 160 member senior band from eight WaMaC schools will be directed by Leo Gerether with selections including The Minnesota March and Star Spangled Banner. A 400 member sophomore and junior band under Robert Thayer of Cornell College will also perform with a dedication march to the American School Band Association. Rehearsals start at 1 p.m. and the concert is at 7 30 p.m. in the Monticello high school gym with public invited.

Monticello businessman Jerry Neill announced the sale of Monty Surplus to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lumpa of Monticello. Neill and his wife Lee started the store 15 years ago in the current Peoples Gas Co. building, moved in 1960, and four employees will remain with the operation unchanged. Neill plans to stay in the area.

Monticello seeks host families for an American Field Service student for the 1971 72 school year contact Stephen Williams at Monticello high school within 10 days. Committee chair Jack Knopp says recommendations go to the national office in early February. This marks the 11th year of the program with Kirsten Romblom from Sweden living with the John Krysan family. Previous exchanges have included Denmark Germany Chile Thailand and Brazil.
