Farm Machinery Should Be Covered
Farmers should shelter machinery during winter to reduce repair costs and improve repair readiness for spring. Harold Beaty of Iowa State College recommends wire-brushing metal parts, applying rust preventives such as red lead blue lead or metallic zinc paint and protecting bright parts from rust. If indoors is unavailable used engine oil can protect gear and a rust preventive or grease can shield outdoor equipment.

Feed Supply Dictates Size Of Pig Crop
Iowa farmers must align spring pig production with available feed, says E L Quaife of Iowa State College. Some may maintain or increase hog numbers. others cannot match last spring. With soft corn used this winter and little corn for next summer, overplanning is unwise. If short on corn, cut spring pigs to match feed and boost fall output if 1946 corn prospects improve.

Reducing Oven Heat for Glass Dishes in Baking
Iowa State College home economists advise lowering oven temperature by about 50 degrees when using glassware. Glass absorbs heat more efficiently, so yeast bread, chocolate cake, mince pies, vegetables, and meats including veal loaf bake at lower temps.
