General Douglas MacArthur unveils a sweeping farm reform to abolish absentee land ownership and empower Japan’s tenants. The plan aims to grant long term, low cost loans for farmers to buy their own plots, with a deadline for compliance by March 15 and potential to double cultivated land.
A memorial Christmas tree was placed in Onslow City Park Friday at 2 30 pm sponsored by the Altrurian club. Mrs W K Kennedy dedicated the tree as a living memorial to our soldier boys with a pledge a ceremony and carols. Agnes Kennedy read scripture and offered a prayer. God Bless America closed the service with the group singing.
A two year Army Air Force service member, now a commissioned lieutenant, takes a position at Citizens Bank in Wyoming after leaving DuPont in Clinton. Clifford Balster, discharged, resides with his wife and baby in Onslow. Irvin Gress also discharged, returns home. Onslow school faculty were entertained at Miss Streeper’s home with dinner, carols, and gifts. Various social visits and new home occupations are noted among Cedar Falls, Frances Shimer, Cedar Rapids, and local families. Christmas stationery advertised at The Monti cello Express with prices listed.
Louis Heiken named township assessor in Castle Grove to replace George Behrends who moved to Cedar Rapids. Trustees approved the appointment at Saturday’s meeting. Various social and civic items follow, including travel plans, church events, and local meetings.
The Philomonte staff present a humorous list of gift ideas for Monti High students and faculty. Requests include a roller skate or bicycle for Mr. Fells, a black limousine for Mr. Shannon, bright ties for Mr. Linn, a psychology guinea pig for Miss Wood, a bloodhound for Dave H, and many lighter wishes such as an elevator, self control, and new cars for some seniors and staff.
The M Club inducted a list of new members including Louise York Lois Clark Jim Seehusen Don Newton Fern Decker and many others. Old members decorated initiates with cosmetics and chaired by Torture committee members Bob Messerli Gene Kuehl JoAnn Schneider and others with Margaret Condit Zimmerman and Marjorie Thomas in charge of refreshments.
The combined music and speech departments present a Christmas program on Thursday December 20 directed by Miss Hansen and Mrs Greenley. Mrs Cecil Goettsch will accompany. The band performs Christmas Rhapsody and selections from the Messiah. The mixed chorus sings Childe Jesus and the glee clubs perform Silent Night and So How A Rose Eer Blooming. The sophomore speech class offers Legend of the Christmas Rose.
Winners of the magazine sales were entertained at a party held Wednesday evening December 20 in the school gym. Games and social dancing were the main events and refreshments were served at the close of the evening.
The Student Council selects a noon recreation program for students who eat in the lunch room with four students and one faculty member supervising. Future Teachers Organization will decorate the Christmas tree in the main hall and January will see review of constitutions. All constitutions due January 8. An all school party is set for Friday the 21st after the basketball game for grades nine to twelve, while grades seven and eight had a party on Monday the 17th. Proceeds fund raincoats for Safety Patrolmen. Meetings at noon in Miss Woods room once a week with lunches brought by council members.
The calendar lists events from Dec 21 in Maquoketa through Jan 31, including Christmas Vacation periods and a County Tournament on Jan 30-31. Cities mentioned include Maquoketa Anamosa Manchester Iowa City West Liberty Roosevelt Mt. Vernon and Mt. Vernon.
Monti led a noise free pep assembly in the gym Friday afternoon with Berk Holmes and Irma Schoon directing the silent and active portions. The band played the loyalty song as six cheerleaders led the student body in several chants before the Keystone match.
Mr and Mrs Boyd Shannon entertained Monti High teachers at a December 19 potluck dinner. The evening featured games cards and a gift exchange as the highlight of the party.
Ione Smith, instrumental music director, launches a campaign for new band uniforms and plans concerts and small group appearances. A Pep Band highlighted recent games with named members, and several chairmen lead the canteen for basketball season. Multiple chamber groups are formed, including Saxophone Quartet and Woodwind Trio.
After Friday night’s game with Keystone Monti students enjoyed a Student Council sponsored dance. Music came from Monti’s own repertoire on plastic instruments. Refreshments were served by council members to raise funds for raincoats for Safety Patrol men.
