Miss Emma Ricklefs passed away this week in Monticello. For 25 years she sold at her father R A Rickleff s store and for 30 years in her own shop. She knew customers by name and helped many, making all feel welcome. Her life honored by kindness, laughter, and devotion to others.
Postwar shifts boost Republican hopes to win control of Congress. Brownell predicts gains as 27 House seats needed and nine Senate pickups in 16 contests outside the Democratic South. Current split stands 39 Democrats 39 Republicans 1 Progressive with 32 seats up.
CENTER JUNCTION The Presbyterian church will host a 3 p.m. Christmas program on Sunday Dec 23 Featuring readings and songs by younger Sunday school children and a junior high pageant titled The Christmas Altar The reader will be chosen later.
Miss Jane Smith announces that only those who have earned an M may wear it. She stresses the value of the M Club award as a product of hard work for athletic and extracurricular members. The note warns that granting the M to unearned wearers would cheapen the recognition and urges Monti students to maintain high standards.
Sociology Classes hold a senior panel on health education and housing in the auditorium. Moderator Colleen Maore led a group including Carol Caspers Carleta Morning Rob Thoeni Louise York Helen Welter and Ketty Lou Null discussing health education in the community school social effects on housing shortage city growth control and social planning for housing shortage.
The 1945 magazine sale is history as the junior class held a party last night. Red team captain Kathryn Bender led hosts with Mary Lou Adams chairing the games committee along with Dorothea Diers and Dick Fingon as assistants. Dancing chairman Don Newton was aided by Helen Gerdes and Dwaine Plueger. Kathryn Bender, Susan Stuhler, and Loren Freese supervised the food.
Mary F. Thomas of Waterloo joins first grade. Thomas Rhatigan Charlotte Manos and Berdena Hansen recently celebrated birthdays in the community.
The freshmen and juniors each have seventeen members on the honor roll, tying for first place. Seniors follow with thirteen. The report notes continued strong academic performance and encourages sustained effort.
Margaret Ann Zimmerman and Philomonte co editor attended the Iowa High School Press Association annual convention at Iowa State College November 30 and December 1. Leading Iowa journalists led contests and group discussions incorporated in the program.
Thanks to Sue Stuhler and helpers who keep the bulletin board neat and attractive. The note adds a whimsical line about midnight chats under a spreading chestnut tree or perhaps an oak, inviting readers to stop by and read the postings.
The Philomonte Panther team traveled to Dubuque on the 23rd and lost 37 to 33. Monti's squad led at halftime but were overtaken in the second half during an exciting evening.
Monti High unveiled a new pep song at the pep assembly before its first home game with Hopkinton. Lois Clark led the event with two new yells, the band performed several numbers, and Miss Wood gave a closing pep talk.
Flu outbreak sidelined many teachers and students over two weeks. Instrumental music director Miss Iane Smith underwent an appendectomy on the 6th at the local hospital, with Miss Miriam Hansen filling in as band director. Absent teachers include Mr Linn Mrs Ross Miss Hetfield Miss Humke and Miss Cunningham.
Louise York has been elected the Monti reporter for the School News cast of the Air. Her items will be included in the program airing at 3 30 p m over WMT every Saturday after noon. The text includes other stray lines about Lois and Loren and a locker reference.
Doris Sankey aged 20 daughter of Mrs Clara Sankey Algona works as railroad agent operator at Myrtle Minnesota. She was a student operator at Manson in 1944 and later named relief operator serving at seven stations.
