At the Jones County Fair a 4 H steer is named grand champion while a younger boy seeks his mother after a scare on the tilt ride. A teen girl laments missing state fair eligibility for a prized project and most attendees depart hopeful for next year’s adventures.
At the Jones County Dairy Improvement fair tent, milk drinking contests drew crowds with prizes and a $1 payoff for 12 glasses. A sixteen year old won a bonus ride labeled Venus in the Shower. A nearby feed salesman alertly offered the $1 bet. Imp. dealer Ed Cox prevented a rolling semi from causing damage by jumping into the truck and applying brakes. Youngsters exploited an automatic drink-dispensing bottle for free pop, while Northwestern Bell reported record switchboard activity during peak hours. The fair enjoyed good weather and larger crowds than last year, per Secretary Claude Appleby.
A boy about 10 years old watched an arcade game as tug-of-war participants were treated after their struggle at the midway. The scene featured a casual observer and a remark about health in a local drink while a tumbling incident occurred with no apparent injuries.

Onslow Bernard Streeper underwent an appendectomy Sunday evening at St Luke's hospital. Mrs Mary Juilis hosted the pinochle club Monday evening with prizes won by Mrs Anna Holtz, Mrs Fannie Hicks, and Mrs Edith Norton. Judi Paulsen stayed Tuesday night with Lynn Balster. Mr and Mrs Larry Paulsen of Cedar Falls visited the Mabel Paulsen home and attended the Jones County fair. Francis Orr went to Chicago with cattle Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Ernie Gearhart and Mildred Streeper were Cedar Rapids shoppers Tuesday. Mrs Mike Klinkhammer of Stanwood was a Sunday visitor in the Jens Jensen home. Mrs Alva Streeper has returned from a trip to Missouri. Mrs Jens Jensen visited Roy Bodenhofer Monday afternoon. Mrs Bodenhofer will teach the Ozark school where Mrs Helen Brown taught last year. Mrs Clyde Nabb submitted to surgery on Aug 18 at Jackson County hospital.
Center Junction residents Kathy Randy and Lynn Ketelsen spent the weekend with grandmother Fredda Ketelsen as parents traveled to Kansas City. Corinne Wilcox stayed with cousin Jeanette Wilcox and attended the Monticello fair. Several relatives from Galena Illinois Chicago Dixon and Grandview Iowa visited Fredda Ketelsen and B D Heiken homes. Mrs Gladys McNeilly returned from abroad visiting Madrid England and Scotland before visiting Shenandoah Iowa.
The Cedar-Jones Association for Retarded Children met in Tipton with 20 members. Special guest Mrs. Victor Bunge announced National Retarded Children week November 13 to 23 and fundraising drives. The group plans to collaborate with a county sponsor due to dispersed members. The Cedar County special school for exceptional children starts August 29, with Amer Legion Post in Tipton offering free classroom space. A color film Tuesday's Child will be shown by the association with a speaker, as refreshments were served.
