A staged Indian wrestling sketch at the Jones County fair drew laughs and a photographer’s click as Candy Candido aimed to shoot a 300-pound opponent. The episode spurred a promo for reprints and confusion over publicity roles amid a concurrent Republican convention and fair week.
Lester Doorenbos died after an auger wiring short circuited while he was working in a steel corn bin elevator at Boyden. Electricity passed through his body as he attempted to plug in the auger.
At the Great Jones County fair twelve junior 4-H boys presented demonstrations. Carla Folkers and Herman Folkers won a blue ribbon with Behave Yourself using Horace Jones as a prop. Gary Burhop and Freddie Robinson earned a blue for Hold Water Where It Falls. Jim and Bill Delay placed blue with Building a Feed Bank.
Express mystery farm foto series keeps Farm No 53 unidentified after readers failed to confirm ownership. A caller suggested Lewis Burrichter but the photo does not match Burrichter farm. Anyone who recognizes the farm is urged to call the office. the operator may receive a free 8 by 10 photograph.
A historic RFD wagon, once common on early 20th century rural mail routes, arrived at the Davenport museum for its final display. Ferdinand Carstens of Durant previously drove the wagon on local routes about five decades ago.
Monticello neighbors Mr and Mrs Larry Guilford and Mr and Mrs Ray Fuller and Kathy of Toddville were Saturday evening guests of Roger Oltmans at 2 Langworthy. Mrs L D Bowers and Judy of Pendleton Ore visited the mother Mrs R P Clark and other relatives for the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brodersen hosted a Sunday baptism reception for Nancy Brodersen at their Wyoming home following her July 26 adoption. Rev. R. F. Gronewald officiated at the Zion Lutheran Church in Wyoming on Aug. 19. Visitors from Ames and Cedar Rapids joined family gatherings and a Fort Sill leave brought Johnny Wurst home briefly from Oklahoma.
The Cedar Jones Association for Retarded Children will meet in the courthouse Community room at 8 p.m. Ana Mosa hosts the event with speakers Mrs. Jerry Parsons and County Superintendent Joseph Beave. Parsons to teach the new class for retarded children.
Richard Russell of Monticello and Harold Conley of Scotch Grove are named United-Hagie hybrid seed corn dealers by C Rodney Johnson United-Hagie general sales manager. They will offer the full United Hagie seed corn line to Prairieburg Scotch Grove and surrounding farms.
Jack Koch of Shelby had his parked car struck while he was repairing a tire and received 15 stitches.
