The Monticello Express defends publishing a tentative assessment schedule for a curb and gutter project. City Engineer Ray Rystrom and councilmen answered questions as readers noted the preliminary figures were based on an estimated $2.50 frontage foot price and will be lower in actual costs.
Onslow The Women’s Christian Service Guild met Wednesday in the church basement with Mrs George Paulsen leading devotions and Mrs George Wessels directing the program on Christ is the Way for the Whole Person Hostesses were Mrs Donald Jansen Mrs Daryl Jansen and Mrs Tom Lathrop Herman Seehusen bought the former Brownell residence in Wyoming Mr and Mrs Wilfred Wherry and son Douglas left Aug 5 for a western vacation including the Black Hills and Yellowstone Park Bert Barnts of Chicago bought the Jack Taylor town residence Jean Barnts of Monticello is visiting with Mr and Mrs W W Barnts
Seventy two Scottish Highlanders from the State University of Iowa toured Paris Amsterdam Cologne and Coblenz then sailed to London for performances in 11 cities before returning to the U S They traveled with Judy Podhaski and Sarah Vernon and explored Rijksmuseum Rembrandt works and Rhine scenery while sharing language misfires and canal transport in Amsterdam.
New acquisition list includes two funny adult titles No Time for Sergeants and Auntie Mamé, a Bible dictionary, Anne Emery’s First Love True Love for teens, and What’s Your Name by Zhenya Gay for younger readers. Summer reading turnover remains high.
Miss Mary Briggs of Minneapolis visits Wyoming and plans a brief stay. Arthur Wallace and Albert Wallace host a wedding for Dorothy Wallace in Williamsburg with Mr and Mrs Howes Viall Mrs Jean Watts and Miss Jesse Howes among guests from Chicago.
Monticello area residents traveled to socialize with neighbors over a weekend. Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Wood of Guttenberg stayed with J. L. Bader, while Mr. and Mrs. James Nelson hosted their son James and family from Mason City and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Kennedy from Ottumwa.
Iowa State College horticulturists say a mulch around tomato plants helps when conditions are dry. They recommend old hay or straw placed 4 to 5 inches deep to conserve moisture and protect roots.
